After chatting with Posh's colorist, Johnny Ramirez, I learned he is a mayjah proponent of soft and natural looks. With high-profile clients such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Mariska Hargitay, and Hilary Swank, it's clear to see that Ramirez's take on hair color certainly lives up to this simply sophisticated approach. Take a look at his tips for having beautiful color.

Pack in the color: After coloring a client, Ramirez coats the hair from the outside with a gloss. "It stays really, really soft and pretty," he says. "This makes the color stay for a long time."
Get a conditioning treatment: "I do Kérastase conditioning treatments afterwards to everyone that walks out of my chair," he says. "When they are due to come back for their color or highlights, their hair is always thick and healthy."

The other day, I had a chat with the ultrafriendly celeb colorist Johnny Ramirez, of the Chris McMillan Salon in Beverly Hills, about techniques and products he used for his high-profile client, Victoria Beckham. Ramirez, who trained under famed color guru Michael Canalé (of Jennifer Aniston caramel highlights fame), also talked about where he gets his inspiration, along with color trends for Fall. Here's what he had to say:

On his approach to hair color:

"I look at my 4-year-old daughter's hair. She's got Gisele [Bundchen]'s hair color. It's an illusion. It looks really, really blonde, but when you crack it open, it's dark blond underneath. It's so natural — she's born with it. So I take that (inspiration from my daughter) and do it on someone that's older."
"When someone comes back from vacation, and they have virgin hair (meaning they have no artificial hair color), I always look to see their hairline and how their hair around their face looks. I duplicate that. Sunkissed highlights around the face are so subtle. I'll do (bleached) tips at the bottom, too. . . and comb to blend. When you do this it creates the illusion of soft, beachy hair — like you've been hanging out at the beach all month."

Regarding trends for Fall:

"Soft and natural hair colors just make your skin glow like you were born with it. Soft and natural — you just can't go wrong with that. Anytime you go really light or too dark it just doesn't look right, so just keep it very soft."

Last year, upon the Beckham's much-anticipated arrival to the States, Celebrity colorist Johnny Ramirez welcomed Posh to her new home by "Californizing" that famous graduated bob to platinum blond levels.

Just this past weekend, Ramirez, who works at the Chris McMillan Salon in Beverly Hills, gave the petite trendsetter's chic pixie some extra zip, and I've got the exclusive details on what went down. Check out my interview below, and look out for some more of Johnny's hair-color advice to come:

Is Victoria just as funny in person as she is on TV?
"Victoria is the most generous, warm person. She's considerate, and super nice — not just to me — but to anybody."

Can you tell me a little about what you did do enhance Victoria's chestnut-brown hair?
"After discussing what she wanted, we decided to keep her a brunette. Victoria's ends were faded to a reddish warm color — this happens to most brunettes. To keep her a soft, natural medium brown, I started with her roots by applying a permanent hair color. Once the color was done processing, I combed it through the ends to break up the line at the shampoo bowl. Then . . . two different types of toners were used to tone the warm ends. I always finish my hair color with a gloss to lock in the color and seal it with shine. That's what makes color look healthy, natural, and beautiful."

Paul Cucinello on the Science of Brassy Hair Color

While I was talking to hair color guru Paul Cucinello about hair glaze, the conversation turned to preventing brassiness, something I hear concerns about a lot. First, Cucinello broke down why it happens in the first place. "When you are using anything chemical, after six weeks the hair totally normalizes to its original state," he explained. The cuticle lifts back up so the product is released from the hair."

So why does red hair looks less red and blond hair look so orange? There's a perfectly logical explanation: "Red, yellow and blue color molecules are in your hair, and the first to come out is the smallest molecule — which is blue. That's why you see so many violet conditioners for blond hair, to control the pigment." Presumably, this means blue hair would be the hardest to maintain. Wonder how that Marge Simpson does it...

Nicky Hilton came to support her sister at the debut of Paris's new MTV reality show, Paris Hilton's My New BFF at LAX yesterday. I'm intrigued by Nicky's hair color — often, colorists go lighter in the front because it's where the sun naturally hits hair and because it can brighten the complexion. While this look is kind of the opposite, the shades of caramel that Nicky's colorist chose and the way her hair is styled here (the darker part is almost like a headband) is something I haven't seen much and I'm digging. Say you're at the salon looking over the color treatment service menu, and you get a little puzzled. Should you have the single process color, or should you go for the double? Well, one thing's for sure: single process will probably take a little less time and save you a few pennies.

Single Process means that a new color or toner is applied all over to create a new base color. The hair is lifted and deposited in one easy step. It's the most common out of the two, and it's wonderful for covering grays and adding shininess to dull hair. Plus, it's also great for the home hair colorist.

Double Process is typically used when lightening hair by more than two shades. First the hair is bleached to remove natural or colored hair pigments, and then pigment is added into the hair to create the desired shade. To avoid hair drama, leave this one to the pros.

My friend and I used to break out the lemon juice in high school to provide a little lightening effect to our hair. Thinking back on it, I'm lucky I even had hair. Sunning with a perm, while squeezing on lemon juice? Could have been a tragic combo.This got me to thinking about the "other" ways in which one can color his or her hair. Celebrity Colorist Marie Robinson Reveals Pre-Fall Hair Trends

Marie Robinson's client list looks like, well, the A-list (Naomi Watts, Liv Tyler, and Taylor Momsen recently sat in her chair). Robinson, who works out of Sally Hershberger Salon in New York City, is also one of the most sought-after colorists for beauty campaigns and color changes for films (from what she's told me, directors can get verrrrrry specific). I consulted her about what her well-heeled clients are doing to transition their hair from Summer to Fall.

These last few weeks, it seems like women are touching up their blonde one last time before it gets colder. But I'm also seeing a lot of people going to strawberry blonde. It's a way of slowly going to red or brown for Winter so you don't freak out when they miss being blonde.

After talking to master stylist Meredith Venesile-Spiros about getting back to your natural color in a budget friendly manner, it was clear that this job was one for a professional — at least for the initial change.

While it may be tempting to do a little kitchen sink coloring at home to save a few bucks, stop before you break out those plastic gloves and make an unintentional mistake. "The fact of the matter is, hairdressers want to help. They are actually saving you money in the long run."

If going from an artificial darker color back to your natural lighter or gray color:

Your stylist will have to take out the artificial pigments by "gradually putting in some super fine highlights," says Meredith. This helps subtly blend your colors without overly damaging your strands. If you were to go all light at once, it could be too much for your hair to take.
You'll probably have to return in a few months to finish off the job, but your healthy hair will thank you.

A few weeks back, Bella reader lotuslight wanted to go back to her roots — literally. She asked what it would take to completely grow out her artificial color and go natural instead, all while keeping it budget-friendly. So, I’ve done a little sleuthing and here’s what was uncovered.

To get the facts straight, I consulted with Meredith Venesile-Spiros, master stylist at Salon V in Chicago and former contestant on the latest season of Shear Genius.

Ironically enough, to get rid of color, you're going to have to add some color. When going back to the tones that nature intended, it's best to stay out of the drugstore aisles to avoid a DIY color disaster, regardless of how tempting (and cheap) it might be.

"At least for the first time, go see a professional to properly make that change," Meredith advises. Let the experts guide you on what it's going to take keep the integrity of your hair intact. In the long run, you'll "save yourself some drama, money, and multiple trips to the drugstore."

To avoid having the embarrassment of heavy roots while your hair grows out, your stylist will talk about gradually blending your previously colored hair into your natural (virgin, if you will) color. Stay tuned to learn more about what Meredith says it takes to make this change a reality.

Update Your Hair With Fall's Color Trends

Maybe you checked out ways to prolong your hair color from celeb stylist Debi Dumas. Now it's time to start thinking about which hair colors you will be prolonging for the upcoming Fall season.

According to Dumas, the latest colors "will coincide with what's going on in fashion." Brighter fabrics and ruby and jewel tones all made appearances on the Fall runways. She says we'll be seeing "warm, but not over-the-top vibrant colors" that will work in tandem with clothing. The idea is to enhance, not compete, with the bolder fabric choices.

For the hair, red-violets and bright, bold tones are out. Natural, soft golden browns and amber tones are in. Gone are the days of heavy streaks, too. Instead, think multilayered and multidimensional — richly diffused warm color around the face.

Henna is a natural orange, burnt-reddish nonpermanent dye. The tannin, or staining pigment, comes from the dried leaves and stems of the henna (aka lawsonia inermis) plant found in India, North Africa and various parts of the Middle East.

Henna is commonly used in body art (usually on the hands, face, and feet) and it can also be used as a hair dye. Since it's gentle and doesn't contain chemicals, it is a safe and wonderful hair-coloring alternative for pregnant women, or just anyone who doesn't want to run the risk of potential toxins permeating their scalp and blood stream.

Henna typically lasts about a week on the skin, but it has been known to last as long as six weeks on the hair. Mehndi, a popular henna skin-painting ritual, is used for weddings and special occasions in Hindu and Muslim cultures.

I had no idea that Rachael Leigh Cook was so adventurous with her hairstyles and hair color until I started rummaging through pictures of her from the past few years. Back in the day, she switched back and forth from brown to red, but over the weekend at the Step Up Women's Network Inspiration Awards Lunch in Los Angeles, her hair looked lighter than ever.
