Product Review: St. Tropez Everyday

Here in San Francisco, I typically feel like we're "in between" seasons. It's too cool for tanks, but too warm for puffy jackets. So, on those indecisive mornings when I'm getting dressed, I'm often faced with the choice: tights or no tights? No tights? Sure, but first my pasty white stems need some help. Enter St. Tropaz Everyday ($30) in Fair to Medium (also available in Medium to Dark).

This self-tanner is marketed as a moisturizer that just happens to have subtle tanning properties. Subtle, for sure — but in the highest of compliments. Seeing that I'm typically the queen of orange knees and blotchy ankles with regular tanners, I was quite impressed by the foolproof nature of this one. Plus, being able to customize the amount of intensity is always a plus in my book.

Other bonuses? A non-nasty smell sans greasiness. Although the aroma is somewhat chemical-y, there's no typical "something's burning" kind of odor — you know that odor, right? The product also claims to improve firmness and elasticity of the skin. The jury is out on that one for me, but my neighbor did say I was looking rather toned one evening as I walked in from work, although I think that was more Winsor Pilates than tanning cream.

Product Review: Gillette Fusion Power Phenom Razor

I've always wondered if men's razors were better than women's. While ours may need to be used around our more (ok, most) sensitive areas, theirs ought to be more user friendly and have less margin for error, as many men shave every day and can't hide any shaving mishaps simply by keeping their pants on. So when I saw Gillette's new battery-operated Fusion Power Phenom Razor, which not only has five blades and a built-in precision trimmer but also a low-battery indicator light (what is this, a razor or an iPod?), I had to give it a go.

At first, I was impressed with the pivot on the blade — I could get a lot closer around my ankles and knees, where I always seem to miss hairs. But somehow as I got further north, first around my upper thighs and underarms, the razor stopped gliding as well (I used a little body wash as shave gel — it is unclear what product, if any, you are meant to use with it). And when I got out of the shower, I was stubbly, even below the knees. So, here's the verdict: The Fusion Power Phenom Razor may be the best a man can get, but as I should have known, a woman can get even better. Want more reviews? Read others or write your own.

This product has mojo — I mean, it literally became the center of attention on a recent Saturday night outing whilst Mr. Bella and I looked on in amusement. After dinner, my friend, knowing all too well that I'm a nut for products, asked what beauty goodies I had on hand. She wasn't disappointed as I whipped out Nicole by OPI Nic's Sticks in Where's My Chocolate? ($7).

Hmm — fun experiment, I thought. Since it's supposed to be so easy to use, why not have my somewhat tipsy friend give it a try? I mean, if she could easily apply nail polish with this product after a few mojitos, it's got to be good, right? To find out,

Product Review: Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask

Would you ever consider spreading mashed potatoes on your face? That's exactly what the Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask ($85) from Fresh feels like. But, alas, starch it is not. It's actually made from cucumber, black tea, sake, lychee seed, jicama root juice, and hyaluronic acid, the big guns when it comes to cell hydration.

My favorite parts are twofold. The first is the light and fresh natural tea and cucumber aroma that is both calming and refreshing. The second part is that it never dries so you don't have to deal with that uncomfortable cracking and stiff sensation. It just sort of absorbs and looks shiny.

It's recommended to leave on for at least five-to-eight minutes, but after speaking with Lev Glazman (one of the co-creators of Fresh), he recommends leaving it on overnight two-to-three times a week for an enhanced effect.

When you wash it off, your face has a glowy and smooth look. My biggest beef with the product, besides the slightly funny feeling that occurs when you rub it in, is the price tag. But, if you've got the extra cash lying around, I recommend giving it a whirl.

Product Review: Shu Uemura Face Architect Remodeling Cream Foundation

The words "architect," "remodeling," and "foundation" don't really bring makeup to my mind. So by its name, you might expect Shu Uemura's new Face Architect Remodeling Cream Foundation ($45) to literally rearrange your face (but not in the way your big brother threatened to). While it may not do that it certainly does more than the average foundation (with its price tag, it ought to).

With SPF 10 and antioxidant rich Jasmine extract, the creamy, lightly scented formula feels like it's good for your skin. The company materials describe the coverage as "medium to full," but when I put it on I was reminded of the time when my best friend thought my Amazing Concealer was foundation — meaning a little goes a looooooong way. I mean, when a foundation comes with an applicator spatula, it means business.

Doing Drugstore: Maybelline Mineral Power Foundation

It can be hard to find a drugstore foundation that blends and covers well, so I was surprised when Maybelline Mineral Power Foundation did that and more. I've been less impressed with other products in the Mineral Power line (the powder foundation did nothing for me), but the foundation is clearly another story. The formula, which has an SPF of 18, glides across skin and covers imperfections without hanging on dry skin. The foundation doesn't budge and dries with a soft finish. With sixteen shades to choose from, you ought to be able to find a color that works for you. And one plus for me above the department store brands (I used to be a huge fan of DiorSkin) is that Maybelline's foundation is virtually scentless. That and the $8.29 price tag.

Product Review: Nature's Cure Anti-Acne Papaya Skin Care System

I'm always a little leery of anti-acne products, because let's face it — some almost do the reverse of quelling the breakout situation. With that said, I realize the effectiveness of any anti-acne product varies so much by individual, and for me, I think I've hit the jackpot with this one (and I hope it works for you, too).

Nature's Cure Anti-Acne Papaya Skin Care System ($19.99) comes as a three-product package. The main acne-fighting ingredients are salicylic acid and papaya enzymes, known for their exfoliating and antibacterial properties. The kit includes:

Acne-Clearing Papaya Cleanser — It's a little more liquidy and low foamy than I am used to, but it did the trick.
Pore-Perfecting Papaya Toner — Removed pretty much all the makeup the cleanser may have missed without a stinging, burning, or "mediciney" feel.
Acne-Repairing Papaya Moisturizer — Super-light feeling, and a little goes a long way. It also wore really well under foundation.

Overall, this skin care system worked wonders to keep my acne problems in check — without producing dry, flaky skin. At first I was a little unsure about the somewhat sweet, musky scent (mostly papaya), but it grew on me with regular usage. And since the results were so stellar, a little stink is acceptable in this case.

Other bonuses? Soft skin, smoothness, no tie-dyed sheets, and reasonably priced — heck, I'll pay anything to put a halt to the breakouts, but when it comes at such a bargain price, woohoo, I say!

Fragrance Review: Tom Ford White Patchouli

With the breathtaking Erykah Badu in the ads (which you loved) and a devastatingly chic white opal glass bottle with 23K gold accents, Tom Ford White Patchouli ($92) certainly has the bells and whistles that make up a cult classic. But as it turns out, I would still wear this fragrance if it came in a plastic spray bottle sold on the street.

White Patchouli is characterized as a "floral-infused wood fragrance," so the patchouli is surrounded by notes of peony, rose, and jasmine. Because I wear a lot of rose (Stella by Stella McCartney also has rose and peony), something about this fragrance is familiar but still fresh. There's a sexy, musky undertone that's very Tom Ford, but also something vibrant about it. Depending how you spend your days and nights, this may be best for the p.m. hours, though it could also make for a hauntingly sexy signature scent. Of course, I can't stop smelling myself, and that's never a good office look.

I'm beginning to really like the concept of products that work while I'm fast asleep (and wide awake, of course). But, I'm beginning to not like the dark circles and puffiness that have made their way to the area just underneath my peepers. So, when team member jennIRL wrote to me about an interesting new depuffing product, I had to give it a whirl.

She asked, "I just saw a commercial for Garnier's Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller. This is definitely something I suffer from on a semiregular basis; have you used this product, or heard anything about it?"

Doing Drugstore: Nexxus Sleek Memory Straightening Smoothing Spray

Determined to protect my hair against heat styling, I picked up Nexxus Sleek Memory Straightening Smoothing Spray ($12.99). When just a heat protectant spray would have done, I'm always curious about hair products that say they can change the texture of your hair (not products like at-home perms, but products like Wash 'N Curl Shampoo). But the claim Nexxus makes on this spray seems semi-plausible: their Sleek Memory technology can lock in the results of a heat styling tool. Whether that's true remains to be seen, but my hair definitely made it through a run-in with my flat iron without static. The downside is that my hair had a somewhat starchy feeling afterwards, which I suppose is better than being fried to the core. Can't win 'em all.

Product Review: Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner

In an effort to find a new makeup routine for Fall, I decided to try Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner in Deep Brown ($14.50). Lately, I've been sticking with liquid liners that come in pen form because I can't draw a straight line. The brush it came with was immediately a red flag for me — it's only a couple inches long and the tip isn't tiny or flat. I dipped the brush in the cream, which felt too soft to give a precise line, and brushed it across my upper lashes, and then on the bottom water line. My liner was instantly amazing; I didn't even need a Q-tip soaked in eye makeup remover. Perfectly lined eyes took under two minutes, and I'm starting to wonder why I thought I needed a fine-point pen anywhere near my eyeballs in the first place!

Product Review: Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10

Back in junior high, my girlfriends and I used to have slumber parties galore. We watched blockbusters like Teen Wolf and bonded over the slathering of "zit cream" to heal our overactive hormones.

Fast-forward to present day. I'm still kind of obsessed with Teen Wolf and those darn pimples have resurfaced yet again. I guess some things never change.

When it comes to spot treatments, I think I've tried them all: creams, gels, concealing treatments, sulfur, salicylic acid...etc. While all skin types will respond differently, benzoyl peroxide seems to do the trick for me, so I decided to give Clean & Clear's Persa-Gel 10 ($4.70) a whirl. Here's what I thought:

Consistency — You know how some creams seem to just sit on the surface, never feeling like they've totally sunk in? Not this product. Somewhat of a cross between a light cream and a soft gel, I loved the non-greasy formulation that easily blended right into my irritated pores. It dried very quickly and left a pleasant "it's tingling so it's working" type of sensation.
Price — Who can beat it? What a great bang for your buck.
Drawbacks — With repeated use, my skin became rather dry around the application areas. I highly recommend using just a dab on an existing breakout or as a preventative measure for problem areas. Also, the product dries with a white residue, so you might consider using it in the privacy of your own home or diluting it with moisturizer if you're going out in public.
Overall Performance — Dryness aside, it worked wonders by shrinking out existing pimples, reducing redness, and preventing new breakouts from forming. And the effects are long lasting, too. I could feel this amazing product working its magic throughout the day, long after I had washed my face.

Product Review: MD Skincare 4-in-1 Facial Treatment

During those humid days when you can feel your hair frizzing and your pores clogging, I grow tired of getting up to wash my face while I'm cleaning up, reading a good book, or, you know, watching VH1. It's days like these that I turn to MD Skincare 4-in-1 Facial Treatment, which is just as convenient at the gym or for travel. Here's why: each palm-sized package cleanses, tones, treats and moisturizes in one fell swoop. At $35 for a box of 30, I probably shouldn't be going through as many as I do (and I admit, individually wrapped anything is not ecologically the best option), but when you consider the price of four products, it's not quite as bad as it seems. The packets come in two types, Dry/Normal and Normal/Oily, the latter of which tingles a little and leaves skin feeling clean. Or should I say, cleansed, toned, treated and moisturized. Take that, Wash-n-Dri!

Doing Drugstore: L'Oreal HiP Jelly Balm in Luscious

I've sure you've seen L'Oreal's HiP (High Intensity Pigment) collection. It's hard to miss thanks to its more modern packaging and a brighter color selection than the brand's regular line. I decided to try the darkest shade of its Jelly Balm, Luscious ($9), which reminds me of Benefit Benetint Lip Balm with a touch less purple.

Jelly Balm is surprisingly unsticky, unscented, and not heavily pigmented (as in, so long as you know where your lips are, you can apply it without a mirror). Luscious is a universally flattering cranberry that looks and feels light on your lips, not waxy or plastic-y. Of course, it doesn't contain any vitamins or SPF protection, so maybe it just feels healthy. But I guess it's the rare lip balm that's going to make a major impact on your life expectancy?

Anyway, I can't imagine the other colors looking very different, but at $9 a pop, at least I can afford more than one. While it's not what you'd expect from the way the color looks in the tub, Jelly Balm in Luscious was a nice surprise. A surprise I'll definitely reapply.

Product Review: The Sanctuary Salt Scrub Bar

There are so many bath and body products to choose from — sometimes it can just come down to the most pleasing aroma. Before I even opened The Sanctuary Salt Scrub Bar ($7), I could already smell amazing scents wafting out from under its plastic packaging. At that moment, I just knew I was going to like it.

This substantial (and long-lasting) scrub bar produces a creamy lather, never feeling too tight or drying. It also has built-in sea salt and loofah fibers, which feel gentle. There's no harsh "ouch factor" here. As for that scent? It's sexy spicy — in a word, alluring. Powdery, but not sweet, it carries notes of patchouli without being too musky. The aroma does linger, but in a refreshing kind of way; it won't annoy your seatmate on the bus ride.

The Sanctuary, which is an actual spa in London's Covent Garden, has been making women feel and smell amazing for over 30 years. Originally many of their clientele consisted of dancers who performed close by. I can see why — I'm feeling a little extra zip in my step these past few days myself.

Product Review: DDF Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer

The two-in-one beauty product has come a long way from Pert Plus. While anti-acne creams have been infused with anti-aging ingredients (and vice versa) for a few years now, DDF's new Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer ($85) addresses something more specific, and promises instant results.

This is a big claim, so after applying it, I stood at my bathroom mirror waiting for my pores to disappear. While "instant" may be an overstatement, I did notice my pores looked smaller within a few minutes. The flowery-scented serum has the texture of a mattifier and yields the same results. The difference is the inclusion of a vitamin peptide complex, which (according to the company) has been proven to drastically speed the renewal rate of the skin's surface. Though I can't attest to the wrinkle reducing qualities just yet, it definitely includes some components of a good wrinkle cream, like Vitamin B3, and my skin feels softer. It didn't break me out and makeup slides right on top of it. The way things are going, I might even buy a magnifying mirror.

Product Review: Ahava Nail Hardener

The Dead Sea has long been lauded for its beauty benefits, as it has a higher concentration of minerals than anywhere in the world. The Israeli skin- and haircare line Ahava uses research conducted on such minerals in its products. I'd been a devoted fan of Ahava Nail Hardener for years, until one day it disappeared from my apartment. Weeks went by with me searching in cabinets and drawers, under the bed, in different purses (did I take it somewhere?), until the guy I was seeing — a guitarist — came clean: he was using it to strengthen his nails. So was his whole band. And they wanted more.

The idea of getting $14 nail polish for a bunch of rockers was so entertaining that I did, and before long, their girlfriends, mothers, sisters, and houseguests were on the Ahava Nail Hardener train. And for good reason: this product dries fast, doesn't smell quite as bad as similar products, and leaves nails looking and feeling healthy using minerals and calcium from the Dead Sea. Nails have a natural-looking gloss and seem to grow faster and stronger. Give it a try, but please don't steal mine.

Product Review: Skinceuticals Emollience

A friend of mine got a facial in Boston and fell head over heels for a moisturizer from SkinCeuticals called Emollience ($50). Her rave reviews about how her skin looked even, supple and hydrated after just one month made me run faster than Forrest Gump to the store. So far I've been using it for two weeks and here are my thoughts:

Emollience has a thin, slip-like texture, but it delivers heavy moisture. It has a light and clean scent that feels refreshing on your face and makes your skin look dewy and smooth. Also, I love that it is reasonably priced for such a large jar. It lasts long too. All you really need is a pinky nail bed-sized dollop for your entire face and neck.

The texture aside, the results are really what make this such a solid purchase. I apply it in the morning and my face doesn't dry out even the slightest bit all day. It absorbs quickly so I can put my makeup on right away without any base or powder sliding off. I use a little bit extra in the evenings, along with an eye cream and when I wake up, my skin looks splotch-free and feels like buttah.

It's recommended for those with dry skin since it contains restorative oils (grapeseed, rose hip and macadamia), but my skin is combination and it seems to be responding well to the formula (meaning, it's not too oily, even around my t-zone). Is this the best face cream in the whole wide world? No, but it definitely ranks high, and I can confidently recommend it to anyone looking for a gentle cream that will give your thirsty complexion a tall drink of water.

Product Review: Pantene Beautiful Lengths Conditioner

The insane amount of traveling I've done this Summer has started to take its toll on my appearance (I've crossed the coasts twice in the last three weeks). Strict airline regulations have me carting around trial-sized samples of products that, while fun to try, are not my actual favorites. I always find solace in the fact that one of my top conditioners, Pantene Pro-V Fortifying Deep Fortifying Treatment ($5), is cheap enough to repurchase in every city. But one recent jet-lagged night, I couldn't find it in the drugstore and instead picked up the brand's new Beautiful Lengths Conditioner, partly because it supports Pantene's great anticancer campaign, and partly because I'm curious if I really need to add a new qualifier to my hair type: color-treated, wavy, dry, and . . . long?

Reader Review: NelsonJ Brazilian Hair Masque

My buddy Nancita has the prettiest chestnut-brown hair, all tumbling waves and shine. And now that I've found the secret to its beauty, I've asked her to share it with all of you. Take it away, Nancita:

"The longer my hair gets, the more I need deep conditioners. I used to think of these products as an unnecessary expense, but I've since learned that conditioning treatments really keep my hair looking healthy, rather than ratty, between haircuts. (Like most long-haired gals, I tend to go a while between trims.) My new obsession is NelsonJ Brazilian Hair Masque ($18-54), a subtly fruity and satiny conditioner that works wonders in just five minutes.

The first time I used this stuff, I was astounded: It smooths my split ends and makes my naturally wavy hair dry just the way it's supposed to. Product Review: Urban Decay Lipstick

I was so excited to check out some of the new Fall items from Urban Decay. My favorite product to look at is the pale shimmery peach lipstick in Indecent ($22). Too bad that my feelings about the product aren't as positive. Upon opening the dagger-adorned case, I anticipated that this peach goody was going to be my next can't-live-without lipstick. However, once I put it on, my excitement deflated like a punctured helium balloon.

I'm hyper-sensitive to taste and smell and this earned a full demerit in each area. The scent is overly sweet (think Splenda mixed with caramel) and it comes off way too strong. I don't want to seem like I'm contradicting myself, so let me make it clear that it's one thing to have your wash-off body scrub smell like food, it's quite another when the product is under your nose. The taste is doubly disappointing. It has a synthetic and sharp, metallic flavor that completely contradicts the smell.

Also, although I like shimmer, this full-on glitter is over the top. When the creamy lipstick settles, the chunks of glitter remain and make your lips look dry and cracked. I wanted to run out from under the lighting and do an immediate lip scrub — that's how unflattering it was.

What I can say is that the texture is creamy (it gets a star for the silky, smooth texture) and that the packaging is adorable (one more star). For anyone that's interested in the alluring color of these lipsticks, I simply urge you to go for a test-drive before you buy.

Product Review: Nars Skin Potent EFA Cream

About a month ago, Nars released a new, highly concentrated, skin-restoring face moisturizer called Lipid Support Potent EFA Cream ($70 for 1.7 oz). This thick, lightly scented lotion is formulated with lipids (Omega-3 fatty acids and ceramides), acai and hyaluronic acid to replenish your skin and to create a more hydrated texture. In turn, this helps aid in skin-cell regeneration and decrease wrinkles and create an overall more supple appearance.

Now, I don't know if you're aware of this, but some ingredients can break down when exposed to the air — and that means your skin isn't getting all of the ingredients it should. I like this container aesthetically, but I love how the airtight seal protects the cream's active ingredients from overexposure to sunlight, germs, and oxygen.

I really like the cream, especially for nighttime, but the one drawback is that has a slightly heavy and greasy texture. It claims to be suitable for all skin types, but due to its intensely hydrating formula, I would suggest it for those with dry skin.

Product Review: Urban Decay De-Slick Mattifying Powder

There aren't many makeup products that leave me feeling totally ickified, but Urban Decay's De-Slick Mattifying Powder ($28) is one of them. Everything from the application method to the way it looks and feels on your face is a colossal disaster.

The hard-pressed light lavender (although it claims to be translucent) powder is difficult to get onto your brush, so you are pretty much forced to use the puff that comes inside. The powder feels chalky to the touch and doesn't spread well. In fact, because it's so oil-absorbent, it makes your skin feel dry, almost like it's cracking.

I was really bummed with the results, because I like a mattifier for my T-zone from time to time, and a powder compact in a cute purple case seemed like a great solution. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that unless you are going for a Bride of Dracula, Dita Von Teese, super-matte, pale face look (or if you happen to be someone with extremely oily skin), I'd steer clear of this powder.

Product Review: Paul & Joe Refreshing Leg Emulsion

Last month, Paul & Joe launched a few new nail and body products for Summer 2008. Of the bunch, my favorite product is the Refreshing Leg Emulsion ($30). This citrusy-mint scented lotion is actually formulated with oil to penetrate deep into your skin, however, it dries to a powdery, velvety-soft finish. It's cool — and I mean that literally, because it also contains baby peppermint leaves and elderflower extract to create a cooling effect on your legs.

I'm pretty picky about my shampoos. I tend to stick with ones that help create volume and shine, but I decided to test out this oldie but goodie Jasmine Smoothing Shampoo from Oscar Blandi ($20) based on a recommendation from my friend who has similarly frizz-prone, limp hair.

She told me that it really helped take the fuzz out of the ends, especially in the Summer months when the air contains extra humidity. I've used it twice and what I've discovered is that it has an incredible floral scent (thanks to the jasmine). Also, it most definitely helped smooth out the ends of my hair (thanks to vitamin E) to the point where I didn't even need to add a greasy, silicone-based serum.

The only drawback to having fresh and sweet-smelling, clean hair is the flat after-effect. My hair just kind of hangs by my face if I don't add in product, so I do wind up having to plump it up with an extra shot of volumizing spray. This is definitely something that I'd use every other day when I want to wash and go and not have the hassle of having to spend extra time straightening out frizz.

Product Review: Michael Kors Classic Leg Shine

From first glance, what appears to look like a stick of designer deodorant, is actually a body bronzer. Underneath the rubbery beige cap of Michael Kors Leg Shine — Classic ($32) lies a smooth (almost oily), deep-amber bronzer that contains flecks of gold. Not only will it create a glowing tan on your legs, knees, arms, and chest, but it also has another function: Leg shine contains a captivating floral smell (Michael Kors Eau de Toilette) that takes the place of having to wear actual perfume.

At first I was scared that it would streak and rub off on my clothes, on my chair, and anything else that my stems came in contact with, but actually it proved to stay put once it dried. Also, it washes off with soapy water and a little bit of elbow grease in the shower.

Easy to apply and easy to remove are pretty rare qualities when it comes to self-tanners, and it's why I like this product so much. The only suggestion I would make is to apply it about a half hour before you go out to give the color and oily texture ample time to set.

This travel-friendly (thanks to the secure cap), scented bronzer is a fun way to achieve a temporary sun-kissed radiance with a sultry scent for special occasions. It's available in: classic, shimmer, and bronze to suit most skin tones.

Product Review: Lush Buffy Body Bar

Buffy Summers is arguably the smartest, strongest, most complex heroine in TV history, and I'm disappointed that we haven't seen anyone come close to her coolness since Buffy went off the air. (Maybe Dollhouse will change that.) But I remember Buffy every time I rub my bottom.

Let me explain. One of Lush's cult products is Buffy ($10.75), an exfoliating and moisturizing bar for use in the shower. You just rub your skin as you would with a bar of soap, but Buffy sloughs away dead skin while leaving a moisturizing layer of cocoa and shea butters behind. It's pretty great, since it effectively cancels out the need to use a body lotion afterward. The only downside is that it can be ever-so-slightly greasy, so you'll need to gently pat, not rub, your skin with a towel. Otherwise, though, it's great if you have scaly, dry skin — or if you just want to relive the days of the Scooby Gang in the shower.

Product Review: Wei East China Herbal Hand & Body Lotion

One of the first products created by Wei East, a company based around Chinese herbs, is China Herbal Hand & Body Perfection ($15). I've tried many hand and body lotions, but this has to be the smoothest and creamiest to date. That, however, doesn't mean that it is also my favorite.

Let's take a moment to talk about the key attributes. For one, it has an incredibly rich formula with a powerful gingery-floral fragrance. It contains five herbs from the Ming Dynasty: curcuma, glycyrrhiza uralensis (or licorice root), ginger, red sage, and ginseng. These ingredients are believed to heal, moisturize, smooth, repair, and reduce inflammation on the skin of your hands. The thick, silky-smooth formula spreads easily without you having to warm it up.

Unfortunately, it is also extremely greasy. The packaging says to apply a generous amount so I squirted about half of the diameter of the cap into my palm. Not only was this far too much, but now I can't seem to get the scent to go away (which I guess could be considered both good and bad).

If you're someone who has very dry skin, or even cracked skin that isn't sensitive, this is wonderful product. The oils will help nourish and normalize your moisture level. If you skin gets irritated easily, my one worry is that the fragrance might be too strong.

Product Review: Korres Citrus Moisturizing Body Milk

Mmm, mmm masculine! The rich and fresh-scented Citrus Body Milk ($15) from Greek bath and body brand Korres is a sensory extravaganza. The smooth and creamy texture absorbs quickly, leaving your skin matte and feeling hydrated and soft. And it smells amazing.

I'm not sure how you feel, but I've noticed that when when creams are heavily fragrant they can sometimes leave you feeling sticky, grimy, and unclean. Fortunately, it isn't the case at all with this body lotion. I appreciate that although the texture is lightweight and thin, it isn't slimy whatsoever.

However, you will need a generous amount to cover your entire body, so if you like this as an everyday all-over lotion, might I suggest you buy it in bulk? A small price to pay to feel like Aphrodite incarnate.

Product Review: Lancôme Defining & Brightening Eyeliner Duo

I'm always on the hunt for a great purple eyeliner. A makeup artist recommended a Defining & Brightening Eye Pencil Duo ($28) by Lancôme because it's not too dark and not too bright or shimmery. It's a subtle deep eggplant that completely passes for a neutral. It looks amazing on green eyes, but my best friend who has brown eyes is now also an obsessed and loyal fan.

The twist is that the other end of the pencil contains the lightest shade of iridescent lilac that has an illuminating effect. The color isn't dramatic, but it creates a halo effect when you apply it just above your brow, to the inner rim of your eyes and just under the purple eyeliner. It goes on smooth without having to be warmed up, and it has a creamy, high-quality texture.

The only drawback is that you might still be wearing it the next morning when you wake up. Even when you wash and Q-tip, somehow a few stubborn remnants seem to stick around in your lash line.

Product Review: Arcona White Tea Cleanser

A couple of weeks ago, I talked to you about my new Arcona Kiwi Clarifying Peel and how much of a disappointment it turned out to be. Thank goodness the brand has redeemed itself, because I was starting to wonder what Lindsay Lohan ever saw in them. Over the last three weeks I've also been using their White Tea Purifying Cleanser ($42) and I have some great things to report.

By far, the best part about this cleanser is the scent. I've actually never smelled a beauty product quite this natural (and that's saying a lot). It has an inviting essence reminiscent of lightly brewed white tea mixed with sugar. It goes on smoothly and has excellent foaming action. All you need is a dime-sized amount for your face and neck. Gently rub in small circles to remove, dirt, makeup, and excess oil. It's even gentle on your eyes and doesn't sting in the slightest.

Your face is left feeling tight and shiny, but not dry. The best part is that my skin looks and feels smoother, plus, it has a little bit of a glow. It's got me thinking that there's something inside that also exfoliates, but I can't figure out what that is. All in all, this is a product that I'll be sticking with throughout the Summer. Since my skin is so sensitive, I wanted to be sure that I shared my fabulous find with the rest of you.

Product Review: Dr. Brandt Antioxidant Water Booster

I'm a skeptic when it comes to ingesting beauty-related supplements. I've tried the Phytophanere Dietary Supplements For Hair & Nails, which were supposed to make my nails and hair grow faster and stronger, but instead they gave me nothing but blemishes. So when I learned about this Antioxidant Water Booster ($35) from Dr. Brandt, I sort of dismissed the product altogether.

However, lately I've been reading lots of positive reviews about the blueberry flavor, so I decided to give it a go. Supposedly, the antioxidant content in one dose is the same as you'd find in 15 cups of home-brewed green tea.

My guess it that it's getting attention because there has been so much written about the powerful effects of antioxidants lately. They help protect your cells from free radical damage, keep your organs healthy, and they may even contribute to fighting cancer and heart disease.

As it turns out, the Water Booster is indeed delicious. I did a taste test to see what I was getting into before I drank the full glass of water. It's flavorful and sweet, but it doesn't contain any calories or even one iota of caffeine or sugar.

Each bottle (there are five different kinds) contains enough for 60 servings. All you have to do is shake it, add one dropper to eight ounces of water, mix, and chug. I've only had three cups and I don't notice a difference in my skin, but as the saying goes, you look better if you feel better. Knowing that I am doing something good for my body definitely makes me feel better, too.

Product Review: Laboratoire Remède Post-Peel Skin-Calming Balm

Some facials involve a bit of discomfort, but they shouldn't burn your skin. Unfortunately, a recent facial used too-hot oils and lemongrass oil, leaving my skin rough, flaky and thoroughly angry.

Enter Laboratoire Remède Post-Peel Skin-Calming Balm ($42), recommended to me by an esthetician at Remède who saw my rough, red cheeks. She recommended this off-white balm, claiming that it would soften my skin and reduce the redness. Truthfully, I didn't have high hopes, but I dutifully took home a tiny sample and applied it that night.

Wowza! The next morning, most of the rough and red patches were gone. The balm contains aloe, shea butter, willowherb extract, and other calming ingredients — and judging by my experience, they work. I have a feeling this balm will be a lifesaver come wintertime, but for now, it's returned my roughed-up skin to a blissfully smooth state.

Fragrance Review: Bali Dream by Estee Lauder

Back in April, I was browsing around the duty-free shop while waiting for a flight and I felt myself drawn to this beautiful new, pink eau de parfum bottle from Estee Lauder called Bali Dream ($42). I love the bottle's bubble-gum color, and the scent inside is so light, pleasant and tropical, I couldn't believe that I hadn't heard any buzz about its launch.

The reason is that this fragrance is considered a travel exclusive, meaning that it's only available in duty free stores (in airports and some train stations) around the world. Funny enough, I always think that airport shops are over-priced traps for the thoughtless few who don't make time to buy gifts before they arrive at their destination. Now I love that there is an entirely new section of exclusive products to check out while in transit.

Bali is a place where smiling is part of the culture and if you've ever been lucky enough to visit, it's nothing short of paradise. The people are happy, the lifestyle is relaxed and the landscape is breathtaking. The fragrance somehow manages to capture the elegant essence by combining notes of orchid, magnolia, honeysuckle, jasmine, ginger, ylang ylang, gardenia, cassia, pepper, tagete, muguet, tuberose, apple, pago pago, coconut, vetiver, vanilla, cedar wood and Bali temple wood.

I can't wait to get back to the airport to stock up on another bottle — and hopefully this time I'll be on my way to Bali!

Product Review: Stila Convertible Eye Color

As soon as I laid my eyes on this Stila Convertible Eye Color ($20), I knew it was special. Not only do I appreciate the value of a two-in-one product (and in this case, a three-in-one product), but it also takes the guesswork out of coordinating your eye-makeup colors. One side of the wand contains a pencil eyeliner, the middle section unscrews to reveal a shimmery powder eye shadow (in the same color family), and at the other end is a plush smudging tip. In a nutshell, it's fast, fabulous, and fool-proof.

The pigment in the eyeliner is rich, dark, long lasting, and the eye shadow blends easily. It's perfect for your pocketbook or for travel because you don't even need to use a brush — it comes with a ready-to-use compact applicator tip.

The darker colors create an easy-to-achieve smoky eye and the lighter colors are a great way to add a sexy touch of twinkle. That being said, the one minor downfall is that you really have to scrub to get the liner to come off. Even when I used makeup remover, I could still see traces of eyeliner under my eyes.

Product Review: Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit

One of my best girlfriends lives and dies for her Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit ($32). She never leaves home without it and claims that the yellow undertone (apparently present in all shades) neutralizes her dark under-eye circles and hides her blemishes and broken capillaries flawlessly. With a strong recommendation like this one, naturally, I had to check it out for myself, and here's what I think:

Initially, I disliked having to deal with the two-step process. I felt there were plenty of concealers on the market that can get the job done just as well in half the amount of time. I thought the coverage was a little bit heavy, and that both the cream and the powder got caught up in the fine lines around my eyes.

However, after checking myself out all day long (yes, I'm vain, but this is my job, folks), I noticed that the powder worked well to mask my flaws with a shine-free finish. It didn't crease much, thanks to the oil-absorbing powder, and it left an undetectable trace on my face — making it seem like I have naturally perfect skin. I also love that it contains good-for-you moisturizing ingredients like vitamin A and vitamin E.

The small pot is chock full of product and will last you well into six months. It's available in 12 shades and should be applied using two separate brushes. Between this and Philosophy The Supernatural, I'm finding that mixing may be the key to getting killer results.

Product Review: Somme Institute Eye

The Somme Institute's Eye cream, simply titled Eye ($72), is formulated to restore skin elasticity and make eyes look brighter. It does this through a special ingredient, MDT5 (Molecular Dispersion Technology 5), a proprietary ingredient consisting of six vitamins. The company boasts that the formula will "produce profound visual changes in skin texture, tone, and clarity to recapture a radiant, youthful complexion."

Sadly, I'll never know. This is because the eye cream has the most off-putting odor, and the consistency of a greasy sunscreen. Let's start with the scent: it can best be likened to a jelly doughnut. Not exactly the smell you'd expect from a $70 eye cream. Secondly, the cream seems too thick and greasy for the sensitive eye area. I prefer a much subtler lotion that blends into the region seamlessly.

Overall, I can't comment on if Somme's Eye would've recaptured my youthful complexion. Unfortunately, I was too turned off to keep it in my skin care arsenal for more than a couple of nights.

Product Review: Omorovicza Plumping Cream

Everyone has days when work feels like a labor of love, but then there are the days when I come home to a shiny package filled with a jar of Omorovicza Plumping Cream ($260) — and suddenly I remember how lucky I am! I first informed you about the amazing wonders of Hungarian skin care products in December and about a month ago, I talked to you in more detail about the Budapest-based brand Omorovicza.

After using the cream for almost a month straight, I am grateful to find something that has noticeably improved the overall tone of my skin. Maybe it's the hyaluronic acid, omega-6 ceramides, the elastins, or the special Hungarian healing minerals, but my skin feels smooth, hydrated, and far less blotchy.

Just a small dab for your entire face and neck will do ya, which I think is great since it's so expensive. The ultrathick cream has a soothing and subtle rosy, lavender scent. It absorbs quickly and leaves your skin feeling hydrated, smooth, and even a little bit brighter. And here's a tip for those of you who don't have almost $300 to burn: ask for a sample. It will last you over a week and you can see for yourself if you think it's worth the investment.

Product Review: Philosophy's The Oxygen Peel

Last night I tried Philosophy's The Oxygen Peel and let's just say I felt like I was participating in a high-school science experiment. This kit involves breaking open capsules, and stirring liquid that rises, and it has foam that undergoes a chemical reaction, and there is some sort of enzymatic infusion that occurs, and, well, I think the only thing I was missing was a Bunsen burner. But after spending 10 minutes with the directions, I was ready to give it a whirl.

The first step involves breaking open an enzyme capsule, pouring the contents into a tiny container (included) and filling it halfway with water. You shake rigorously and then allow one minute for the gel to form and rise. You then apply to your face. After that you apply a separate oxygen foam directly on top of the gel. This is when the two parts collide and provide a blast of oxygen to your skin. After waiting three minutes, you scrape the cream off of your face with a spatula.

So, now that the process is spelled out, what was my reaction to this science experiment? At first I was annoyed that it was so labor intensive, but once both parts were on my face, I enjoyed the sensation. It was sort of cooling, but it bordered on ticklish. The real magic came when I scraped the product off of my face. My pores felt like they could breathe, and overall my face felt clean. I say, if you've got the time, this one is worth the effort.

Product Review: Scott Barnes Cream Color

I first told you about the launch of Scott Barnes' Cream Color ($25) back in the Fall, but until I recently tried them I had no idea just what I'd been missing. It's no secret that I'm a huge Scott Barnes fan. Everything from his loose powder shadows, to his lip slicks tickle my fancy, but these take the cake.

All you need is the tiniest amount to create a natural looking, almost dewy (without looking too slick) finish. I'd love to say that Sway (a medium beigy-pink) is my favorite color for my cheeks, but the truth is that mixed with the smallest schmear of Flush (a bright peach) I look like a burst of sunshine.

Did I also mention that they can double as lip stains and even eye shadows too? I love Delish (light mauve), Native (deeper mauve) and Bloom (bright pink) for my lips, and Luster (pearl) creates a glowy, ethereal effect for eyes and upper cheekbones. To apply, all you've got to do is smile and in small, circular motions blend the blush from the apples of your cheeks along your cheekbone with your fingers. They also look terrific layered over powder, bronzer — anything you like really, without it creating a muddy, overdone effect. Welcome to the greatest beauty gift for under $25.

Product Review: Watersall Purified Water Atomizer

I just got back from a wonderful weekend in Palm Springs, so I know how refreshing water can be on a hot day. When the temperature hits 100 degrees, your body begins to beg for a little agua. That's just about the time I grab a glass of water, or if I'm lucky, take a dip in the pool. Unfortunately because my vacation is over, I don't have a pool nearby. That's where Watersall's Purified Water Atomizer ($12.50) comes in handy. Or should come in handy.

The atomizer is literally an aerosol-spray can that projects water wherever it is sprayed. Not a new concept, but one that I have yet to wrap my head around. Literally the ingredient list for this can is water and nitrogen. That's all, folks. It just boggles my mind that someone can charge $12.50 for a tiny can of water. The other beef I have with this product is that the water smells old, kind of like moldy tap water. If I were you, I'd just buy a bottle of water, drink most of it, and dab the rest onto a paper towel and blot your face. But, if you're really clamoring for that spray relief, try something like Neutrogena's Sheer Body Mist, which will not only provide some coolness, but also SPF protection.

Product Review: Philosophy Handmade Lemon Custard Hand Cream

I'm a big fan of Philosophy products. I love the packaging, the cutesy names and the way the company always creates such festive items for holidays and celebrations. However, I've found one product that I just can't stand behind. Their Handmade Lemon Custard Hand Cream ($10-$18) has a milky, lemon scent that has a past-its sell-by-date food smell. Mom always told me never to mix lemon with milk, and this is a perfect example why it's a bad idea.

The formula is outrageously thick and although most of the lotion absorbs quickly, what remains is a fair amount of white, waxy residue that looks like clotted curdle in your cuticles. Not only are you left with an itching desire to wipe your hands on your legs (anything nongreasy), but when the smell sets in, you'll be running for the hills to find a sink. I've told you before that I'm a big hand cream gal, but this shea, mango, and cocoa-butter lotion leaves me with nothing but a sour taste in my mouth.

Product Review: Borghese Nail Lacquer

Earlier this year, Borghese launched a nail care division, and they have created a collection of amazing products. Without going into each and every item, the main event is their nail lacquer ($7.59). The creamy and self-leveling polish (this means that it manages to somehow side-step streaking) comes in 48 shades that range from pale pink to deep melons and browns.

What's great is that they are free of DBP, toluene and formaldehyde, but what makes them stand apart in a crowd is the coolest brush I've ever encountered.

They call it duale curve tip, because it contains two brushes that are fitted side by side in the handle so that it covers your entire nail bed in one fell swoop. OK, so I'm exaggerating a little bit — it covers all of my nails besides my wide thumbnail all at once.

The polishes contain proteins (to hydrate and strengthen), olive leaf extract (to seal in moisture), ground up semi-precious jewels (for intense shine) and Vitamin E (for a silky texture). The lacquer is creamy, brilliant and dries fairly quickly. For the large bottles, I also think the price is fair. Think you'd be interested in trying out a new Borghese nail polish?

Product Review: Arcona Kiwi Clarifying Peel

A few weeks ago I talked to you about the Los Angeles based skin care brand Arcona. I've now had the opportunity to spend some time with the products and really get a feeling for how they affect my skin. One item that I've found noteworthy is the Kiwi Clarifying Peel ($85).

First of all, the smell is divine. It has a strong kiwi aroma and it even has the little black fruit seeds right there in the pot. The color is light green, but when you spread it on your face, it looks clear. The texture is thick and gooey and upon contact with your skin, you'll feel an instant tightening and cooling. The directions say to leave it on for ten minutes, but I ran to the bathroom after five. My face began to itch terribly from the fruit acids and I couldn't help but panic.

Thank goodness no damage was done. My face was pink for only ten minutes and I didn't suffer any burns or peeling, but my oh my, was that scary. Also, and I feel this is pretty important — I've had the peel for a few weeks now and have noticed that it's already beginning to smell rancid. Arcona suggests keeping their products for six months, and now I know why. The lack of preservatives must mean that they have a short shelf life.

I can understand why people love these products (they smell amazing and have a celebrity following), but I just don't think they are right for me. Does anyone else have any stories about disappointing skin care products they have tried?

Product Review: Victoria's Secret Bare Bronze Gleaming Self-Tan Body Tint

Even though there are hundreds (thousands?) of self-tanners out there, I’m pretty lazy about using them. It’s just so much work to exfoliate, wipe on the tanner, and wait for the tan to build. I want instant results, dangit.

More or less, that’s what Victoria’s Secret Bare Bronze Gleaming Self-Tan Body Tint ($18) provides. This self-tanner lotion provides a shimmery tint right away, all the while working on the actual faux tan as well. When it comes out of the tube, it’s a disarmingly artificial shade of deep bronze. Fortunately, though, it spreads out evenly and smoothly on skin, and then it’s subtle (even on very pale complexions).

Product Review: Anthony Logistics Shave Cream

With Father's Day just three weeks away, there's no time like the present to start thinking about gifts for dear old dad. I was given a tube of Anthony Logistics Shave Cream ($16) to test out, but I thought it was a little bit silly for a gal to review such an important grooming staple for a guy. So I decided to give it to my better half to report back more accurate, male-minded findings.

He loved the fact that it was really slimy, that it spreads easily, and that you don't need very much to cover your entire face and neck. Apparently the slick and slimy quality (which kinda made me cringe) is a good thing for men; it means that the lotion connects to your face, providing a less-irritating shave. He felt that it stayed with the blade for the entire stroke, unlike other brands, which can skip and cause nicks.

The only drawback, in his opinion, was the lack of menthol. He appreciates the way menthol has a cooling and soothing aftereffect, which distracts him from the hot, burning sensation that goes along with shaving. At this price for a designer cosmetic product for men, I am definitely interested in stocking up for Dad. How about you?

June Jacobs recently launched a few new skincare products, and last week I gave her Redness Diffusing Masque ($56) a test run. I was particularly impressed with the creamy, thick consistency that never dried to a stiff finish like clay masks usually do. It goes on smooth and has a mild, fresh scent. Instead of hardening and feeling uncomfortable, it penetrates your skin. When it was time to wash it off, the layer was thinner, so it just slipped right off.

What was left over was most definitely a soothed and visibly less red complexion. The mask contains botanical extracts and vitamins that help heal aggravated skin while reducing inflammation and redness — and I like that there are no parabens or preservatives that sometimes irritate sensitive skin.

The mask can also be used as a treatment after a facial or waxing, since it's so soothing. The only drawback is that it comes in a hefty pot, which makes it difficult for travel, but on the flip side, you're getting a lot of product for your money. For anyone like me who struggles with occasional redness and blotchiness, I would confidently recommend this gentle calming mask to you.

I hadn't heard about Thalgo until a friend of came to town and brought the Delicious Comfort Cream ($56) along with her. She bought the lotion based on a recommendation from her facialist and swears that after just three weeks of daily use, it has transformed her skin from dull and flat into a creamy, enviable, smooth, even and supple texture.

I've been hoarding it for just under a week now and at first, I found the yellowish color to be off-putting (it looks like a jar of sebum), but the rose oil and clean spa smell instantly allayed my fears. It is intended for dry skin, so it's a powerful way to nourish, hydrate and plump up your face. It's fantastically rich because it contains shea butter, and to ensure that the ingredients are properly released, you're supposed to warm a dime-sized amount between your fingertips before patting it onto your face and neck — much like how you would apply Crème de La Mer.

The result is comfortable, cool, soothed and slightly dewy skin. The plastic jar is lightweight and since all you need is a little bit, the 50 milliliters should last you six months. I've asked my friend to leave me with a sample because even though it's only been a few days, I'm undeniably hooked. All of the icky gray flakes on my face are already gone — it's unbelievable.
