Definition: Shiatsu

Shiatsu involves a rhythmic sequence of pressure to unblock and balance flows of life energy, commonly known as "chi." Similar to acupressure and acupuncture, this form of massage focuses on your body's points and pathways considered essential for health and well-being.

The word shiatsu means "finger pressure," so it makes sense that practitioners use mostly finger pads, and no massage oil, while you wear loose cotton clothing. According to MassageTraining101:

The focus is on specific zones on the skin that are located along the energy meridians. When these meridians are unblocked the major body systems and organs they represent are encouraged to heal and attain perfect balance. Shiatsu bodywork brings about a sense of relaxation while stimulating blood circulation and lymphatic flow.

Sounds great, but it still comes with a warning: After their first Shiatsu massage, many clients complain of flu-like symptoms, body pains, or headaches as side effects. (Wait, I thought the purpose of a massage was to relieve aches and pains?!) Thankfully, these symptoms (should) never last long and decrease with each additional treatment.

Definition: Eucalyptus Oil

When I think of eucalyptus, the image of koalas munching these leaves in the wild immediately pops into my head. However, the plant's medicinal properties can be traced back to Aboriginal people of Australia who used it as a remedy for skin problems and respiratory ailments – pretty similar to the uses today.

Eucalyptus essential oil comes from the steam distillation of the tree's leaves and branches. It actually takes over 100 pounds of the plant material to make just two pounds of oil! The resulting active ingredient of eucalyptol relieves muscle and joint pain (like in Huiles Essentielles Stress Relieving Massage Oil), cools and invigorates (especially combined with Spearmint or Rosemary), and even functions as a sunburn soother or insect repellent (Eucalyptus Towelettes).

While the aroma is strong on its own, it's often diluted and mixed with complementary earthy scents, such as pine, for perfumes as well.

Definition: pH Balance

You hear about pH balance all the time, but what the heck does it mean anyway? Without getting too technical on you, pH, which stands for potential of hydrogen, measures the acid or alkaline levels of a solution.

The pH scale ranges from 0-14:

Acid 0-6.9 (coffee, lemon juice)

Neutral 7 (pure water)

Alkaline 7.1-14 (toothpaste, baking soda)

Skin has a pH of about 5.5, which is mildly acidic. Harsh chemicals (whether acid or alkaline) can strip away the skin's protective layer, or acid mantle. So stick to a gentle soap to keep your skin soft and supple, and avoid over washing in general. It can cause dry, lackluster skin.

Healthy, normal hair ranges from 4.5 to 5.5. When hair becomes too alkaline, it can look damaged and dull. Some things that can cause this are thermal styling, coloring, perming, and bleaching. The solution? Find a low pH product (around 3.0-3.5) to put your tresses back in balance. Your shiny, smooth hair will thank you.
Definition: Glucosamine

Maybe you've heard of glucosamine before — something to do with arthritis, you think. Well, you're right, but there's a bit more to it than that.

Occurring naturally in the body, this little compound is composed of glucose and an amino acid called glutamine. Essential for the production of a molecule that helps repair cartilage, glucosamine also works wonders as an ingredient in anti-aging skin care products.

Since the amount of glucosamine production tapers off as we age (jeers), it's often used as a supplement for the relief of arthritis (cheers). Just as glucosamine promotes connective tissue regrowth in the joints, it also promotes tissue regrowth in the skin.

Used in skin care products, glucosamine encourages production of collagen, improving elasticity, making skin look smoother, firmer, and plumper. Another benefit? It also has somewhat of an exfoliating effect, reducing the appearance of age spots, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation. I'm all for that.

Skin revitalization doesn't always come cheap. For a list of products with glucosamine,

Definition: Cardamom

Want something delicious to eat and lovely to smell? Cardamom comes from seeds inside the husks of a flowering plant. Native to India, it has a strong scent and taste. It is used in both cooking and medicine and can be ground up and baked in a wood-burning oven, or it can be pressed to create an oil.

Cardamom also has a cooling property, similar to mint, however not quite as strong. It is one of the more expensive spices (actually, it's right behind saffron) and is in the same family as ginger. Medicinally, it is used as an antiseptic and to treat heartburn, nausea and stomach disorders. Chewing cardamom can improve bad breath, too.

In fragrances, the oil often used in small quantities (since it's aroma is so strong) and is typically blended with geranium and rose. Since it's such a powerful spice, those with sensitive skin should do a patch test before applying directly on your body.

Definition: Cuticles

Cuticles — we've all got 'em, but why? Cuticles are the dead layers of skin cells that surround the base and sides of fingernails. Glamorous image? No. Necessary for preventing infections? Yes. Cuticles help keep ward off germs that may otherwise enter through a gap between nail and skin. Scientifically known as eponychia, these little strips of skin need to be cared for to maintain nail health and appearance.

Here are some tips for keeping this hardened layer soft and jagged-free:

Moisturize your cuticles with an oil or cream like Green by Nature Lemon Verbena Cuticle Cream ($4.99) to loosen the skin.

Lightly push back cuticles with a cuticle pusher to improve appearance of the nail bed.

With a super-gentle touch, trim any rough skin or loose edges with a cuticle nipper.

Finish with a hydrating lotion, like Laura Mercier Almond Coconut Milk Hand Crème ($15) to keep hands and nails looking pretty.

Definition: Gommage

My esthetician friend is constantly lecturing me (with only the best intentions in mind, of course) on the perils of over-exfoliating. Here are some common phrases that are typical of our discourse:

You're thinning out your skin.

You're causing tiny tears.

You're actually speeding up the aging process.

What have I done? How can exfoliating be so wrong when it feels so right? My friend suggested I try gommage, which literally means "to erase." A gentler kind of exfoliator, gommage is a cream or paste that is applied to the face and/or body. After drying for a few minutes, it is massaged away. Typically formulated with some type of enzyme, the rubbing action of the massage gently helps slough off dead skin cells, and is less aggressive than certain exfoliators like alpha hydroxy acids and body polishes.

Although this spa treatment has been around for a while, it seems to be taking on a resurgence as of late. Unlike other exfoliating treatments, which require the use of a shower to rinse off, there is no need to remove the product after use. To unleash your radiant skin, check with your local spa for available services. Otherwise, here are some great at-home products:

From Decleor: Purete Exfoliant Natural Micro-Smoothing Cream ($38)

From Laura Mercier: Face Polish Gommage Facial ($30)

Definition: Parabens

Parabens are groups of chemicals used as preservatives in a wide variety of beauty products (up to 90 percent of them, from shampoo to toothpaste to self-tanner) and sometimes as food additives. Some parabens are found in nature, like the antimicrobal fruit of the blueberry shrub, but all commercial types are synthetic.

Despite many years of seemingly safe use, studies have begun to suggest that the use of parabens is less than healthy. One of the most famous studies linked the use of parabens in antiperspirants to breast cancer after researchers found parabens in samples of breast tumors. According to the American Cancer Society, there is "no good scientific evidence to support this claim" and "ongoing studies to date have not shown any direct link between parabens and breast cancer risk" — but the organization does acknowledge the need for further scientific investigation. Many companies have released paraben-free products that are worth a try while the jury's out.

Definition: Inner V

The "Inner V" of your eye isn't a technical term, it's a makeup-application one that refers to the inner corners of your eyes. By adding a highlighter or brightener to this area (see the white shimmery shadow that creates a v-shape on Blake Lively's eyes), you can really make your eyes stand out.

Learning how to play up your inner v is easy. Simply use a gold, pink, white or cream highlighter, eye shadow or liner pencil and draw a horizontal V along the top to the bottom of the inner corner of your eye. Blend the product with your fingers and extend the color just under your lower lash line. This trick works wonders with all eye shapes, and it's especially effective when you are trying to give close-set eyes more balance.

Definition: Almond Oil

Almond Oil (or sweet almond oil as it is sometimes called) is a carrier oil that is made from warm-pressed, sweet-almond kernels. It has a pale yellow color in its natural state, and it contains strong concentrations of vitamin E.

It is frequently added to emollient bases to help soften and heal. That's why we see it in many face moisturizers, body creams, massage oils, ointments, hair and nail (specifically cuticle) treatments. Just be sure to avoid it if you have nut allergies in food; the oil can cause problems topically as well.

Definition: Lavender

The color lavender is a pale shade of purple, however the Lavender plant has leaves, seeds, flowers and a rich scent which is often used in foods, medicines and dyes. Its name is derived from the Latin root, "lavare" (to wash) since the Romans used to add lavender to their baths.

Lavender has many uses. Not only is it part of Herbes de Provence and can be added to both sweet and savory cuisines (it's actually part of the mint family), but it can also be dried and made into sachets and potpourri.

In the beauty world, lavender oil is used frequently because of its calming, soothing and antiseptic qualities. It can be found in shampoos, soaps, bath and body products, fragrances and cosmetics. Do you have a favorite lavender scented product?

Definition: The Afro

You've probably seen, or maybe even worn, an afro. But do you know about the history of this hairstyle? This natural look became widely popular in the late 1960s to 1970s, during which the Black Power and Black Is Beautiful cultural movements were in play. The style became a personal-is-political statement from African-Americans who wanted the world to see that their natural beauty (both hair texture and skin color) should be considered equally as beautiful as that of Caucasians.

Afros are maintained by using a hair pick, and compared to the stress and pain of relaxing hair, many people find it's easier to go natural. Even though afros are less common today than they once were, curly-haired people continue to wear them proudly — including Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, who sports a version of the afro in the new Tom Ford ad campaign.

Definition: Henna

Henna is a natural orange, burnt-reddish nonpermanent dye. The tannin, or staining pigment, comes from the dried leaves and stems of the henna (aka lawsonia inermis) plant found in India, North Africa and various parts of the Middle East.

Henna is commonly used in body art (usually on the hands, face, and feet) and it can also be used as a hair dye. Since it's gentle and doesn't contain chemicals, it is a safe and wonderful hair-coloring alternative for pregnant women, or just anyone who doesn't want to run the risk of potential toxins permeating their scalp and blood stream.

Henna typically lasts about a week on the skin, but it has been known to last as long as six weeks on the hair. Mehndi, a popular henna skin-painting ritual, is used for weddings and special occasions in Hindu and Muslim cultures.

Definition: The Patch Test

The Patch Test is something that you're likely to see on the back of products if you're someone who reads labels. Simply put, it's a fool-proof way to check and see if your skin will turn red, become itchy, or swell due to an ingredient in a beauty product.

Kiehl's is an advocate of the patch test and it's something I recommend to anyone with dry, highly-allergic, or sensitive skin. Apply a small amount of product (about the size of a dime) to your arm (preferably the underside of your forearm), cover it with a Band-Aid, and keep an eye on the area for 24 hours.

I know it seems basic, but it works. You know the old saying about an ounce of prevention, right? If you don't,

Hair is gathered at the nape of the neck and then twisted upwards and inwards while gathering more hair from the sides until it reaches the crown of the head. It is secured in place by bobby pins or hair combs along the way.

The French twist has remained a popular hairstyle since the early 1800s. It can be worn tight and tidy or unkempt and messy for a more relaxed look.

Definition: SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

I know what you're thinking: Who doesn't know what SPF is? But the truth is that every time I quiz a group of gals about their sun smarts, there's inevitably an unsure shrinking violet in the corner. I thought this would be the perfect chance to clarify what the SPF in all of the sunscreen-related beauty products actually means.

SPF, short for Sun Protection Factor, is a number that, according to the FDA, must be apparent on all sunscreens. The number indicates how long you can be exposed to the sun without turning red. For example, if you are someone who burns after 10 minutes and you apply SPF 15, then you will be shielded from turning red 15 times longer than if you didn't apply sunscreen.

Naturally, the higher number SPF you use, the more protected you'll be — and if you have fair skin, you'd be advised not to use anything less than SPF 50. It is also important to understand that sunscreens protect you by absorbing UVB and/or UVA rays. Most sunscreens shield against UVB rays, but if you really want to be sun savvy, I suggest reading the packaging carefully to ensure that it also offers UVA defense.

Definition: White Tea

White tea comes from young tea leaves and unopened buds on tea plants. It is extremely rich in antioxidants (even more potent than green tea), which help to scavenge free radicals and minimize visible signs of aging. White tea tastes similar to green tea but it's a little bit sweeter and more delicate. Also, it actually has more of a pale green color than a white appearance.

It is important to understand that white tea isn't oxidized or bleached. It is processed by the buds withering and air-drying so that none of the nutrients are lost. Well, actually the caffeine level is lower
than in regular tea since the caffeine develops in mature tea leaves.

White tea is becoming more and more popular in beauty products since it's so healthful — and brands such as Origins, Korres, L'Occitane and Neal's Yard have already integrated it into their collections because of its ability to even out skin and help promote new cell turnover.

Definition: Jasmine

Jasmine is a vine that breeds white, star-shaped flowers (some varieties are yellow or purple). They grow from April to September and there are more than 200 known species. The flowers give off a sweet, strong scent popular in women's fragrances, and when pressed, their essential oil can be extracted through an expensive and elaborate process called enflourage.

The highest quality of jasmine is grown in the perfumery capitol of Grasse, France. It also grows naturally in India, China, and Australia. Jasmine is also used in a raw form to balance hormones, treat depression, improve the appearance of stretch marks, and soothe sensitive skin. It is used in tea to calm nerves and to reduce headaches. Additionally, Yasmin (Persian for Jasmine) is a popular name for girls.

Definition: Clary Sage

The oil comes from the purple flowers and the leaves of the plant and is often used as an antiseptic, a holistic treatment for the kidneys and the stomach, and a calming agent for anxiety and nervousness. It has actually been known to create a kind of light-headed euphoric feeling, which is why it should be avoided when pregnant.

In small quantities, clary sage is also commonly used in women's fragrances and bath and body products. Lisa Hoffman likes it so much that she named one of her Variations scents after the plant.

Definition: Blackheads

I throw around terms like pimples, acne, blackheads, and milia pretty loosely, but there are distinctions between these various forms of bumps on your face. Since we already know all about acne and milia (those pestering deep white bumps), I thought I'd explain exactly what blackheads are so that you'll have a better understanding of your skin and the best products to use for your specific trouble areas.

Blackheads are comedones (clogged pores) that are blocked by excess oil and dead skin cells. The black color isn't because of dirt or makeup (a common misconception); rather it is from sebum that has been oxidized by the air. They are a type of acne vulgaris and typically appear in the T-zone. Blackheads are easily removable by extractions and by regular exfoliation.

Definition: Peptide

A peptide is a chain of protein molecules that serves as a messenger within your body. For your skin, this means that peptides transmit information back and forth between the dermis (the deeper tissue level of your skin) and the epidermis (the surface of your skin). Specifically, they tell the inner levels of your skin when the surface needs repairing.

As we age, the peptide messenger bonds deteriorate, and our skin loses the ability to repair itself as effectively. Skincare companies have begun to tap into the antiaging potential of peptides, hoping that using them in topical creams will mimic the body's natural production of them and stimulate the reformulation of collagen and general healing and brightening of the skin's surface.

As with any cutting-edge skin care, peptide-based products can be pretty pricey. Let me know if you would be interested in a product post about peptides!

Definition: Goji Berry

Goji Berry, also known as Chinese Wolfberry and Lycium, is a small, soft red fruit commonly used in Chinese medicine. The berries are believed to boost the immune system, sperm production, circulation, increase longevity, and help protect the liver. They are rich in amino acids, vitamins, beta-carotene (which also makes them great for the eyes), and antioxidants; they contain 2,000 times the amount as oranges.

When dried, they can be directly ingested or brewed in tea; I've tried these chewy delights and they're pretty tasty. More and more we are seeing the berries in beauty products such as cleansers and creams. Keep an eye out for this super fruit in upcoming product launches.

Definition: Keratin

Keratin is a strong, fibrous structure of proteins that are found in skin, hair, nails, and teeth. It is made from amino acids that bond together and form a protective layer. If damaged, skin, hair, and nails commonly become weak and unhealthy looking. This is why you will often find keratin in hair products (to help strengthen the hair shaft and give it resiliency) and in skincare treatments (to help with moisture loss and firmness).

Definition: Ion

Need a physics refresher? An ion is an atomic particle that is looking to either gain or lose an electron in order to achieve molecular stability. It does this by attaching itself to the nearest, oppositely charged ion.

Negatively charged ions are found in many haircare products and tools today because of their ability to bond with and change the structure of the molecules they come in contact with. By breaking down water molecules into smaller bits, they allow hair to dry in a fraction of the time. Ions are also starting to be used in some haircare lines because of their ability to soften and open up the hair cuticle, allowing it to absorb more moisture.

Definition: Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide is a mineral that is commonly found in food coloring, toothpaste, paint, and sunblock. It absorbs UV light at a high capacity, it doesn't break down in the heat of the sun, it's gentle on the skin without leaving white traces and it creates a physical barrier against rays making it a sunblock, not just a sunscreen. Therefore it is often present in SPF for children and those with sensitive skin. Also, since it is encapsulated inside of a silicone molecule, the application is smooth and lightweight.

However, there is controversy surrounding titanium dioxide because of its possible link to cancer in humans. The argument for it is that it still blocks cancer-causing UVA and UVB rays, making it safer to use than nothing at all. For those of you who are looking for a titanium-dioxide free sunscreen until more conclusive evidence is released, check out these options.

Definition: Lanolin

Lanolin is a common ingredient found in lip balms, shampoos, lotions, and cosmetics. It comes from excreted sheep sebum and it's found in their wool. It is then collected, neutralized, filtered, bleached, and deodorized into a waxy consistency with a yellowish color. While it can be extremely nourishing, soothing, and softening, lanolin has also been known to cause allergic reactions in humans.

Sheep are treated with pesticides to prevent disease and bugs. (Poor sheep!) If the pesticides aren't properly removed from the lanolin, it can lead to redness, inflammation, itchiness, and blisters. Additionally, over time, lanolin often leaves a greasy residue in fine hair.

If you are going to use lanolin-enhanced products, medical-grade lanolin is hypoallergenic. If you aren't sure about the quality of the lanolin, inquire about the chemical removal process. Lastly, if you have highly sensitive skin or an allergy to wool, stick with products that you know are lanolin free.

Definition: Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a pungent, unpleasant odor. It is found in many household products such as glues, adhesives, paper product coatings, and in some insulation materials. It is used as a bacterial disinfectant and embalming fluid, and it's a common treatment for warts since it dries out the skin.

Formaldehyde is also a preservative often found in nail polish. It helps harden the lacquer and prevent it from chipping. Unfortunately, it is highly flammable, toxic and is proven to be carcinogenic in animals (with studies linking it to human cancer too). Breathing in formaldehyde can be detrimental to your lungs, eyes, throat and nose when inhaled. It can also lead to headaches, fatigue and dizziness.

Since there are many formaldehyde-free nail varnishes on the market, it's important to be aware of labels and to choose your products wisely. And I would stay far away from hair-straightening treatments that use formaldehyde. After all, beauty products are intended to enhance your body, not harm it .

Definition: Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are swollen veins that generally appear on the legs. They are often raised, lumpy, uncomfortable and unpleasant-looking. They form when the valves inside of your veins malfunction and blood winds up seeping down your legs instead of being pumped back up towards your heart. This causes blood to concentrate and swell within weakened areas. Those areas also don't get as much oxygen to them, so the blood is also darker.

According to a recent study, 75% of women and 50% of men in the U.S. suffer from varicose veins and/or spider veins (a less serious form of varicose veins, shown at left).

Varicose veins are genetically inherited. They often occur when there is a hormonal change in your body, when you remain stagnant for more than a few hours at a time, from smoking, from being overweight, and from not drinking enough water. The good news is that they are treatable through surgery, laser treatment and by sclerotherapy — a thin needle injection that safely isolates and destroys the problematic valve inside of the blood vessel.

Source

Definition: Sirtuin

Sirtuins are some of the latest discoveries in anti-aging. The enzymes are believed to help prevent cell oxidization that commonly leads to cell death. In terms of your health, they help fight aging, obesity, type II diabetes, gout and Parkinson's disease.

In the beauty world, they work to keep your skin cells healthy for an extended amount of time. Studies show that they can help protect against photoaging and stress.

Without being too cynical — I mean, how much of this do we actually know is true? — don't be surprised if you see products from Avon, Estee Lauder and Caudalie claiming they've bottled the next fountain-of-youth ingredient. These brands have already integrated sirtuins into some of their products. In fact, you can read more about Avon's Anew Ultimate Age Repair Night Cream (which Allure has stamped with its seal of approval) here.
Definition: Bergamot

I am not sure why, but I have been under the impression that bergamot — an ingredient I often come across in fragrances — is a spiny flower. Indeed it is, but did you know that the Italian and Ivory Coast-based plant also produces a pear-shaped yellow citrus fruit? (It is not, however, related to the bergamot herb.)

The skin of the fruit yields a delicate, yet spicy, essential oil that is found in one-third of all fragrances. It is also used to treat acne, eczema, and sebhorrhea. When it's not being used for its aroma, it can be found in Earl Grey tea (it aids digestion), insect repellent, and medications that treat urinary tract infections and depression.

Definition: Tibetan Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum Sinense (a.k.a. Tibetan chrysanthemum) has found its way into skin care products because of its anti-inflammatory and gentle pain-relieving qualities. Rich in minerals and amino acids, it cools and calms the body. Since it helps reduce blurred vision and eye pain, you will likely see Tibetan chrysanthemum in products targeted at correcting puffy eyes.

In Chinese culture, it's common to incorporate chrysanthemum tea into a meal because it also helps cleanse and protect the liver and kidneys from toxins.

Definition: Retinol

Retinol is a pure derivative of the active molecular form of Vitamin A. It has been shown to increase cellular turnover and stimulate collagen production, which can lead to healthier, smoother, and younger-looking skin. It is also useful for the treatment of acne, as the stimulation of cell regeneration helps to clear clogged pores.

It is available in low concentrations in many over-the-counter products. Higher doses are available for more severe skin issues, but they're available by prescription only, since the overuse of Vitamin A can lead to a number of health problems including birth defects. Regardless of whether you go with a mild or stronger form of retinol, wearing sunscreen is imperative.

Definition: Hyaluronic Acid

It lies within your connective tissue layers and acts as a support to your collagen and elastin fibers. It helps your skin stay plump and smooth because of its ability to absorb up to 1000 times its weight in water.

Starting at around age 20, our skin progressively loses its ability to retain moisture and we start to see the formation of fine lines. Using skin care products that contain hyaluronic acid can help your skin absorb moisture more effectively. In fact, the injectable wrinkle-filler Restalyne, is comprised of mostly hyaluronic acid.

Definition: Extraction

If you have ever had a facial, you've likely heard the term extraction. It might sound painful, but if done correctly, this simple and painless procedure removes pore-clogging sebum. It is done manually by a trained facialist, dermatologist, or esthetician using a metal tool or by applying gentle pressure, after they have cleansed your skin and opened your pores with heat or steam.

Keep in mind that pores are sensitive, and if your skin isn't prepared or the extraction is done incorrectly, it can cause broken capillaries and irritate the skin which may result in more breakouts. When in doubt, it is best to avoid the at-home extraction tools, and leave the squeezing to a professional.

Definition: Thermage

Radio frequency waves are applied to the skin through a painless machine that heats up collagen in the deep layers of the skin while cooling and protecting the surface layers. The procedure helps boost new collagen growth, smooth out wrinkles and tighten up facial contours.

One major benefit of Thermage is that there isn't a huge time commitment (30 minutes to two hours) and it doesn't require downtime after the procedure. It also continues to improve the texture of the skin after the treatment.

Definition: Vetiver

As it turns out, vetiver is a tall grass that grows in volcanic areas of India and Haiti.

The essential oil that comes from vetiver is derived from its extensive network of roots. They are washed, chopped, soaked in water, and distilled to create a green, herbal scent similar to a really fresh potato peeling.

Vetiver oil also has other uses than fragrance. It has antiseptic and muscle-relaxing qualities, and it can be taken orally to calm nervous tension or used topically to heal redness, skin irritation, and inflammation on sensitive or oily skin. If you are interested in layering vetiver, it also very much complements lavender, patchouli, and sandalwood.

Fangotherapy is a type of treatment where thermal mud that contains high concentrations of minerals are spread over the body to help cleanse, purify, and revitalize the skin. After the mud is applied, the treatment also commonly involves bathing, perspiring, and a massage.

Not only does a fangotherapy session leave you looking radiant and feeling calm (a result from the warm mud), but it also helps draw toxins out of the body, minimize muscle aches and pains, and help treat osteoarthritis, gout, and skin irritations.

In French, le balayage means "strands of color." The technique can be done in a chunky or subtle way, but the effect is generally softer since the highlights are more sparse than with a methodical aluminum foil technique. It's a great way to achieve a natural, beachy, and relaxed bright look.

Baliage is less time-consuming than getting a full head of traditional highlights. It is easier to maintain, too, since the roots will blend in with the rest of your hair as they grow in.

Definition: The Bob

Originating in the 1920s, the bob is a short, blunt, and classic hairstyle in which the weight of the hair falls between the ears and chin. It can be styled with or without bangs and in various lengths, but a proper bob never grows past the shoulders.

Below are photographs depicting many different modern bobs. Kate Bosworth wears a classic-length one blunt-cut bob, Christina Ricci wears a shorter, more manicured Louise Brooks bob, Rihanna dons a top-heavy pageboy bob, and Jenny McCarthy wears the ever-popular angled bob. Which contemporary bob do you favor?

Definition: Rooibos Tea

When the needles are processed they turn red, and in Afrikaans, rooibos actually means red bush.

Not only is rooibos low in tannins, but it has a strong aroma and is one of the most popular drinks in South Africa. In addition to tasting delicious and being an excellent source of antioxidants (it contains higher concentrations than other teas), it can also be used as a toner on your skin to reduce puffiness and redness, especially around your eyes.

Definition: Chignon

A chignon is a low bun that is created by twisting hair into a knot or a roll and pinning it at the nape of the neck. It is French word that is pronounced "sheen-yon,” and it comes from the French phrase chignon du cou, meaning nape of the neck.

The chignon is an age-old hairstyle associated with classical sophistication. Stemming from ancient Greece and China, it became extremely popular in America in the late 1940s. Although it has taken on many variations throughout the years, we can see from a recent photograph of Katherine Heigl that this hairdo is still extremely popular today.

Definition: Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is considered a natural fruit acid (it comes from sugar cane) as well as an alpha-hydroxy acid. It is used to remove heavy rust and grease from metal materials, but it is better known for reducing the buildup of dead skin cells.

In addition, it draws moisturizers into the skin and is commonly recommended for use in combination with a toner and cream to create an even, smooth, and more youthful-looking complexion. It often creates a tingling sensation on skin, but it shouldn't be painful upon application.

There is a bit of controversy surrounding glycolic acid because of its potential dangers. (Remember, it's also used to remove rust from metal!) If the concentrations are too high, it can cause serious burns. Also, skin becomes sensitive to sunlight, so a high SPF is necessary when going outside. Have you ever tried any products containing glycolic acid? If so, were the results worth it?

Source

Definition: Collagen

This explanation is long overdue since this term comes up so often, especially in the context of skincare. Collagen is a long, fibrous, and extremely strong protein located inside of your body's connective tissue. It is what keeps skin looking plump and elastic, and it is abundant in cartilage, bones, ligaments, tendons, and teeth.

As we age, our bodies begin to produce less collagen. That's why mature skin can appear saggy, wrinkled, and less resilient. Some topical products tout collagen as an ingredient, and while it can help keep your skin moisturized, it can't replace collagen that's been lost. However, collagen can be injected into isolated areas of the skin to create a firmer, smoother appearance.

This teensy deep plum-colored berry contains serious amounts of antioxidants, phytonutrients, amino acids, fiber and beneficial fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9) to keep your skin looking healthy, your immune system strong and your body's vitality and energy levels high.

The acai berry comes from a group of palms located in Central and South America and are known to be among of the most nutritious foods found in the Amazon. (It's also a pretty tasty treat when mixed up in smoothies!)

Cosmetics companies like Tarte have already begun to include acai to their list of good-for-your-skin-ingredients, and Fresh is coming out with a new Sugar Acai Age Delay Body Cream soon. So be on the lookout for this new berry that's making its sweet debut on the beauty scene.

Definition: Melissa Oil

Melissa is a sweet- and pleasant-smelling essential oil that is also commonly referred to as lemon balm. In Greek, Melissa means honey bee and the plant is often found growing near bee hives. It is considered to be one of the most medicinally powerful oils in aromatherapy practice due to its strong antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and sedative qualities.

Since it is antiviral, it is a safe and effective cold-sore treatment. In addition, its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties also make it a terrific, nondrying and nonabrasive spot treatment.

Melissa is expensive because it takes anywhere from three to seven tons of plants to make one pound of oil. Therefore, it is usually diluted to make it more affordable. Melissa oil is associated with helping nervous disorders, headaches, and emotional imbalances such as anxiety and stress.

Definition: Cranberry Seed Oil

Cranberry seed oil is a wonderful way to obtain the health benefits of flax seed and omega 3 fatty acids without having to endure any of that stinky fishy smell from eating salmon.

The oil has a few beauty benefits, especially for the complexion. It helps prevent moisture loss, it's an anti-inflammatory (meaning that it reduces redness and swelling), and because it is easily absorbed into the upper layers of skin, it acts quickly.

Cranberry seed oil is a great addition to facial creams for dehydrated, rough, dry, or mature skin. It's believed to help the flaking and scaling symptoms often associated with eczema and psoriasis.

Definition: Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is a rich, fatty-acid emollient that is high in amino acid proteins, Vitamins A, D and E and potassium. It is known to be the most moisturizing of any fruit oil — which makes it excellent for plumping up dry, dehydrated skin especially on the face. Suitable for most skin types (with the exception of highly sensitive skin), it is sometimes used to treat eczema and psoriasis.

Avocado oil comes from the flesh of the avocado fruit. (Yes, it's a fruit!) It is easy to extract and may often appear on labels as persea americana. Besides being a wonderful beauty oil that soothes, softens and penetrates to the lower levels of the skin (helping slow down the aging process) it is also very nutritious. Because it is among the most expensive natural oils, it's often blended with other fruit or nut oils (commonly almond oil) to help manage the cost.

Definition: Neroli Oil

Neroli is an extremely precious and expensive material. It is a fragrant oil that comes from the orange blossom (also known as the bitter orange flower) and it grows mainly in Morocco, Tunisia, Spain and various other areas of southern Europe. It has a soft, fruity smell that has become increasingly popular in many of today's fragrances.

One of the reasons neroli oil is so costly is because once the blossoms are picked, they are almost immediately distilled since the quality of the oil will weaken once the flowers begin to wilt. Therefore, it can not be harvested and dried should any crop issues arise.

Neroli oil has many different beauty benefits such as excellent skin toning and brightening properties. It is also good for problematic (blemished) skin, stretch marks, scars and mature skin since it improves elasticity as well as circulation.

Other common uses for neroli include antiseptics and antibacterials. It is also believed to treat those who experience hormonal surges during menopause or bouts of PMS — good to know!

Definition: Argan Oil

Twice in one day I heard buzz about the amazing qualities that Argan Oil has on skin. The first was when I was reading about Josie Maran Cosmetics Argan Oil Moisturizer and the second was during my interview with Liz Earle (more on that tomorrow). Since these ladies hold Argan in such high esteem, I found myself interested in finding out more about the "gold of Morocco."

The Argan tree comes from southwest regions of Morocco, where it can withstand harsh environments with extreme heat, drought and poor soil. It grows a round fleshy fruit with an olive texture, and inside there is a nut where the oil comes from.

Argan oil is dark with a red tint. It's believed to have medical benefits such as lowering cholesterol, improving circulation and building up the immune system.

It is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E which helps to nourish dry, hydrated skin. Also, it has mild anti-inflammatory properties and protects the skin from free radical damage.

Another common use for Argan oil is to make a traditional Moroccan bread dip known as amlou, which also contains almonds and peanuts and honey. Couple it with one of Yum's recipes, and you've got one beautiful snack.

Definition: Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a natural essential oil, an antiseptic, antibacterial, it fights off various fungi as well as many different types of germs. It is commonly referred to as Australian tea tree oil, and by it's latin name, Melaleuca alternifolia.

There is a multitude of first-aid and household uses for tea tree oils. Treatments include fighting athletes foot, fighting off cold and flu symptoms, oral thrush, cold sores, toothaches, gum infections, ringworm, head lice, nail infections, body odor, mosquito bites, cuts, abrasions, and sunburn. (Whew!) It can be used as a natural spot treatment for blemishes, which is why you'll see it in so many acne treatments.

As you can see, tea tree oil is a versatile healer as well as a soothing and effective disinfectant. It can reach the lower layers of skin and it promotes sweating. This is helpful when you body is trying to ward off infection. Stay tuned this week for my series on products containing tea tree oil!
