DIY Spa Treatment: A Relaxing Herbal Steam

Taking a few minutes out of your day a few times a week for a relaxing herbal steam is great for your mind, your body and your skin. It helps remove toxins, dirt and oil from your pores — plus it gives you some time to meditate and ponder what's happened in your day. This simple herbal facial steam recipe takes ten minutes to complete, it's safe, satisfying and will hopefully result in a clearer complexion. Here's what you'll need:

A quart of hot water

Half of a lemon

A handful of fresh cilantro

A handful of fresh basil leaves

Three drops of rosemary essential oil

For easy, step-by-step instructions on how to make your relaxing herbal steam at home,

DIY Spa Treatment: A Botanical Face Wash

This DIY gentle facial cleanser recipe takes just minutes to put together yet leaves your face feeling soft, hydrated, and clean. Since it contains thyme (a puffiness reducer) your skin will look calmer and less irritated. I tweaked it to add ingredients that tone and tighten. Although this cleanser won't lather, I guarantee you'll feel it working. Here's what you'll need:

1/2 Tbsp of dried thyme

a few small shavings of fresh ginger

2 tsp crushed fennel seeds

1/2 cup boiling water

1/2 lemon, juiced (and take out the seeds)

To find out how to concoct this invigorating botanical face wash at home,

DIY Spa Treatment: A Lovely Lavender Liquid Body Wash

For all of you who have really enjoyed my at-home beauty recipes, I really think you'll love this easy to make scented body wash. Not only is it a fraction of the cost of most store-bought products, but it's something special that you can share with house guests — you wouldn't offer them your used soap bar, would you? Here's what you'll need to create this luscious liquid body soap:

One bottle of unscented shampoo

1 tsp xanthan gum (optional)

15 drops of lavender essential oil

5 drops of peppermint essential oil

5 drops of tea tree oil

DIY Spa Treatment: Ginger-Mint Body Scrub

Store-bought brown sugar scrubs are divine, but when their prices swing upward toward the $50 mark, that's a lit-tle high for most people. Fortunately, whipping up your own scrub couldn't be easier — and the results are just as good.

You will need:

Honey

Freshly grated ginger root

Chopped fresh mint leaves

Olive oil

Brown sugar, light or dark

To see what to do,

DIY Spa Treatment: A Quick Beach-Ready Pedicure

Over the years, I've noticed that the sand and sea tend to deteriorate my pedicures more quickly than just about anything else. That's why I love this easy-to-achieve quick and simple pedicure that can be done in about ten minutes flat. It's easy to master, so it can keep your feet looking groomed all summer long. Here's what you'll need:

A bowl of hot soapy water

Toe spacers to separate toes

Toenail clipper

Base coat

Sheer pinky-peach nail polish

Topcoat

DIY Spa Treatment: A Sensual Massage

A body massage is a great way to relax, release stress, improve circulation and it can also be an intimate experience between you and your lover. By choosing your partner's favorite aromatic essential oils and creating a calm atmosphere with music and candles, you can help ease tension, reduce anxiety, and soothe aching muscles. This creates a more positive mood and a deeper bond between the two of you.

Keep in mind that since you're not a licensed masseuse, use gentle, deliberate strokes on the body. I recommend having your partner wear nothing but undies (even that's optional) and rubbing in the oils all over with a little bit of pressure. Don't try and work out deep kinks or you could do more harm than good. The goal is to pamper your partner for at least a half an hour with your touch. Here's what you'll need:

Warming massage oil

Massage tools (optional)

Pillows for proper positioning

Three full-body towels

A stable and comfortable surface for the massage

Candle or essential oils to burn

Soft background music

For step-by-step instructions on how to achieve a sensual massage in the comforts of your home,

DIY Spa Treatment: Peppermint Aftershave

I've polled the guys in my circle of friends and they all agree that shaving creams or aftershave products that contain some kind of minty, menthol ingredient feel the best on their face. An aftershave splash is cooling, soothing, and it serves as an antiseptic against dirt and germs as the pores begin to close.

For those of you looking for a homemade Father's Day gift, this peppermint aftershave recipe (tweaked from this one) is thoughtful, inexpensive and easy to create. Just remember to go light on the mint. The goal is to create a little tingle and an overall calming effect, but if he nicks himself shaving, too much mint (or alcohol) will sting. Here's what you'll need:

1/8 cup peppermint essential oil

2 cups rubbing alcohol

1 cup witch hazel

1/8 cup lavender essential oil

1/4 cup glycerin

1/16 cup eucalyptus essential oil

A clean, empty bottle

DIY Spa Treatment: A Tropical Callus Tonic

Pesky calluses (aka layers of bulky dead skin cells) often appear on your feet, especially in the Summer months when you tend to be barefoot more. It's true that they help desensitize your feet from the sharp edges of pebbles and seashells, but for those of you who aren't taking extensive walks on the beach, they are unnecessary and unsightly. Calluses look dry, cracked and flaky, so it's a great idea to treat them if you're planning to flaunt your feet in sexy sandals this Summer. To create a moisturizing coconutty-pineapple tonic, you'll need:

A foot-bath (or a wide bucket)

Two and a half cups of pineapple juice

One half-cup of coconut milk

A pumice stone

Moisturizer for dry skin

A pair of cotton socks

DIY Spa Treatment: Sunscreen

When I first stumbled upon this recipe for DIY sunscreen, I was a little wary because the SPF factor is unclear. But, after researching zinc oxide, I've come to find out that it is the best absorbent of both UVA and UVB light and it is photostable (meaning its chemical breakdown is unchanged upon sun exposure). The good news is that the SPF factor is quite high. The bad news is that it leaves a white mark wherever you apply it.

The original recipe doesn't call for an essential oil, but I've tweaked it a bit. I really like the way that just one drop of a powerful botanical oil can cover up that zinc smell. My pick is peppermint, but I'd also recommend rosemary or lavender. Here's what you'll need:

1 tbsp zinc oxide

1 1/2 tsp light sesame oil

1 tbsp rosewater

1 drop essential oil of your choice

Mixing bowl

Double boiler

For step-by-step directions on how to make your own sunscreen,

DIY Spa Treatment: Plumping Facial Oil For Dry Skin

When your hair suffers from chemical and environmental damage, you can help restore vitality by applying a hot oil treatment. Well, when your face becomes dry from the Winter or even from too much sun, I find that applying a facial oil is a helpful solution for replacing moisture loss and for filling in fine lines and wrinkles. I've found this terrific plumping facial oil recipe from Liz Earle that I think you'll love — the smell alone will send you over the moon! You'll need:
DIY Spa Treatment: Hot Oil Treatment For Dry Hair

Hot oil treatments are a fast and easy way to help restore elasticity, shine and moisture in dry, over-processed hair. They should instantly make your hair look and feel healthier, and they can be done anywhere from once to twice a week depending on the condition of your hair. I found this at-home hot oil treatment recipe from the Long Locks Hair Care Cookbook and have been eager to test it out.

Although I haven't tried this exact combo of ingredients yet, I have created a wonderful DIY treatment from a blend of jojoba oil, avocado, geranium oil and soybean oil. I loved the results, but found it to be fairly messy — and I didn't love the feeling of mashed-up avocado in my hair. That being said, feel free to add in fresh avocado, or a little jojoba oil if you desire. This recipe is simple, neat (you can bring it right into the shower with you) and it doesn't require a ton of ingredients. You'll need:

1/2 cup of soybean oil

8 drops of sandalwood oil

8 drops of geranium oil

8 drops of lavender oil

For three step-by-step directions,

DIY Spa Treatment: A Soothing Clay Mask

If you're "blessed" with acne-prone but sensitive skin, this mask should be right up your alley. Clay is incredibly useful for fighting acne and overly oily skin because it soaks up excess oil without overdrying your skin. A dash of honey provides natural antibacterial properties, and adding a little bit of cucumber will create a calming, soothing effect. I recommend using this mask once a week after cleansing and exfoliating. Here's what you'll need:

1/2 cup green clay

One cucumber

One tsp. honey

A fruit/vegetable juicer (optional)

For the easy-to-follow steps,

DIY Spa Treatment: Soft and Bright Springtime Hands

When I came across this Carol's Daughter recipe for an at-home hand softener, I immediately headed for the kitchen to test it out. I didn't have all of the ingredients (like coconut oil) so I substituted it, but the end result was softer, smoother and definitely more vibrant skin. I just love that these easy treatments won't take up much of your time, but they instantly make you feel pampered. If you've got some coconut oil, sugar, one lemon, a pair of cotton spa gloves and a mixing bowl, you're in business. Here's how to get silky spring hands in ten minutes (including prep time).

Step 1: Stir 1/2 cup of coconut oil, 1/2 cup of sugar and the juice from one lemon together in a mixing bowl. If you have a favorite essential oil (I recommend lavender or chamomile) with this, add in two drops and mix thoroughly.

Step 2: Take a handful from the bowl and scrub it vigorously all over one of your hands for one minute. Repeat with the other hand.

Step 3: When you are finished, brush off the sugar with a paper towel, but be sure that it doesn't absorb all of the oils. Then, slip your hands into the gloves anywhere from one hour to overnight.

Source and Source

DIY Spa Treatment: Make Your Own Shimmer Lip Gloss

Recently I was shopping around in a toy store looking for gifts for the wee ones in my family when I came across a make-your-own lipstick kit. It came equipped with a sparkly container, food coloring, and what appeared to be a generic brand of Pixy Stix to flavor the gloss. I read the contents and the directions on the back and thought I'd share this simple recipe with you. And don't worry, this one's more exciting than just mashing up your old blush. What can I say, I guess the kid in me will never tire of rolling up my sleeves for a fun, hands-on project. Here's what you'll need:

food coloring

an empty container

1 tsp. sugar flavoring (i.e. Pixy Stix)

a pinch of glitter

1/4 tsp of hot water

1 heaping tbsp. petroleum jelly

For three fool-proof directions,

DIY Spa Treatment: A Danger-Free Deodorant

This fun, easy at-home liquid deodorant recipe is free of aluminum, parabens, and paba. It's a safer alternative to antiperspirants — but remember, it won't keep you dry, it will only help to disinfect and cover the smell of your body's natural perspiration. If you want to concoct your own danger-free deodorant, here's what you'll need:

1 spray bottle

1/4 cup witch hazel extract

1 tsp aloe vera gel

1/2 cup mineral water

1 tspn vegetable glycerin

two drops lavender oil

three drops tea tree oil

For step-by-step directions on how to combine all of the ingredients,

DIY Spa Treatment: Homemade Hair Remover

For those of you who are interested in at-home waxing kits, you'll love this recipe for a quick and easy homemade hair removal product. It's inexpensive, effective, and all you'll need are a few common kitchen ingredients. Before you begin, set aside:

a cup of sugar

a quarter cup of honey

the juice from one-half of a lemon

1 tbsp corn starch

a dozen thin cloth cotton strips

a wooden tongue depressor

Following the steps are simple if you read carefully. Here's what you'll need to do:

STEP 1: In a clean glass bowl, combine the lemon juice, honey, and sugar. Mix together and heat on medium in the microwave for two minutes. Stir for one minute and then let it cool. The mixture should still be warm when you use it, but not so hot that you're in danger of burning yourself.

For the last three steps,

Are you suffering from dry, flaky, and cracking skin but are sick of paying for expensive moisturizers that you're not even sure you're going to like? This (surprisingly) easy and affordable DIY recipe for a hydrating face cream may be just the thing you've been waiting to cook up!

DIY Spa Treatment: Manicure

So many people always ask me why they can't achieve a salon-quality manicure at home, so I thought I'd break down the technique and the tools for you. DIY manicures are not only a great money saver, but I happen to think they are a relaxing weekend ritual. Here's what you'll need:

Cotton Balls

Paper Towels

Nail Polish Remover

Emery board

Cuticle Cutter

Cuticle Remover

Wooden manicure stick

Base Coat

Nail Polish

Step 1, Remove Old Nail Polish: Begin with clean, dry hands and be sure there is no dirt under your fingernails. Then, wet the cotton balls with nail polish remover and one at a time, press down firmly on the nail and then pull away so that you get most of the polish off in one fell swoop. Repeat until all of the nail polish is off.

Step 2, Trim and File: Next, cut your nails to the desired length, or, if they are short, you can simply file them to a uniform length and/or shape. Popular nail shapes include variations on rounded edges, long and short squares and pointy tips.

For the final two steps,

DIY Spa Treatment: At-Home Hair Purifier

If clarifying shampoos aren't getting rid of the greasy, grimy residue that gets left behind in your already oily hair, you'll love this at-home purifying hair treatment. Made with aspirin to help stimulate your hair follicles and apple cider vinegar to get rid of build-up and control dandruff, it'll help your hair feel bouncier, lighter, and clean as a whistle. Here's what to do:

STEP 1: Wash your hair as usual

STEP 2: Crush two aspirin and pour them into an eight-ounce cup filled with apple cider vinegar (use more vinegar for thick hair and less for fine hair).

STEP 3: Next, apply to damp hair and leave on for fifteen minutes and then shampoo hair again. Skip using conditioner unless your hair is really tangled. In that case, just use a little bit on the ends and rinse well.

Origins Incredible Spreadable Ginger Body Scrub may be one of the best-smelling, calming products on the planet. I've had a love affair with this sugary, lemony, and gingery item for about five years now. It does the trick every time to bring me to my happy place during bath time.

Although it's not ridiculously expensive at $25 a pop, my indulgence adds up quickly throughout the year. That's why then I saw an amazing DIY recipe for another ginger body scrub I got really excited. To find out what you'll need to create this little slice of Chinese heaven right in your own bathroom,

DIY Spa Treatment: Thanksgiving-Inspired Body Scrub

You've gone out and bought all of these fresh ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner, but you've still got some leftovers lying around. Instead of watching them go bad or killing yourself trying to concoct a makeshift meal with minimal groceries, indulge your body and pamper your senses with this fresh and yummy Thanksgiving-inspired body scrub. It's really easy to make — and now your insides and your outsides can savor the goodness of comfort food! Here's what to do:

In a medium-sized saucepan, mix together and heat 2 oz. of apricot-kernel oil, 1 oz. of sunflower oil, and 1 oz. of jojoba oil.

Next, turn off the heat but add in 1oz. of cornmeal, one teaspoon of sugar, one tbsp. of ground pecans, and six drops of lavender oil. Stir.

When everything is cool enough for your skin, stand on a large towel (this could get messy) and gently rub the mixture onto your body in circular motions. Don't forget about your toes, your neck, and your knees — but you will want to avoid your face.

Rinse off in a warm shower and don't use any soap. Allow the oils to moisturize your skin. When you are about to get out of the shower, give your body a cool rinse and then gently pat your body dry.

DIY Spa Treatment: Alfalfa Mint Footbath

We all know how wonderful it can feel to take a long soak in a bath, but for those of you who are pressed for time but still want to indulge in a little treat for your tired feet, here's an at home, do-it-yourself recipe from all-natural beauty expert Janice Cox. She believes that “If you can cook, you can create your own beauty products." Here's what you'll need to concoct a fabulous and calming foot bath for your footsies!

Use a piece of cheesecloth and wrap four tablespoons dried alfalfa leaves, two tablespoons dried mint leaves and two tablespoons dried thyme leaves inside.

Fill a basin with two gallons of hot water, and pour in four tablespoons of Epsom salts.

Stir the bath until the salts dissolve, then float the herbal bundle in the water to steep until the temperature cools.

Finally, soak your feet in the fragrant water anywhere from fifteen to twenty minutes. When you are finished, pat your body dry and massage a thick foot cream or grape seed oil into your skin.

DIY Spa Treatment: Face Brightening Mask

Feeling as tired, dull and dry as your skin looks? Don't worry, here's a quick and easy at home recipe to brighten your complexion and put the life back into your lackluster skin. All you'll need is some gram flour, turmeric powder, lime juice, olive oil and milk. Sounds easy enough, right? Here's what to do:

Add one teaspoon of gram flour into a clean, medium sized mixing bowl. Gram flour is in the chickpea flour family and is a very popular ingredient for facial exfoliators in India and Pakistan.

Next, add a pinch of turmeric powder to help disinfect and cleanse the skin without drying it out.

Then, add in about four drops of fresh squeezed lime. Limes are packed with Vitamin C and AHA's. They help to lighten and brighten even the oiliest of skins.

Next, drip a half teaspoon of olive oil into the bowl and slowly begin to emulsify the mixture. This will help moisturize the skin. Lastly, blend in a half teaspoon of whole milk to soothe and calm your face.

Stir the ingredients together and apply the mixture to your skin for half an hour or until your face starts feeling a little dry. Then wash your face first with warm water and then with cold water. For more DIY Spa Treatments, click here.

DIY Spa Treatment: Mojito Hand Scrub

Got a few left-over bar ingredients from all of the mojitos you served at your beach party this weekend? Don't let them go to waste. Instead, create a simple, at-home DIY mojito scrub. This treatment is great way to combat dry hands.

The sun, ocean and especially heavily chlorinated pools can dehydrate your skin. Thanks to another one of Raechel Cunningham's home remedy tips, you can easily exfoliate, nourish and moisturize your paws. Here's what to do:

Chop up three to five mint leaves (mint helps energize cells) and place them in a mixing bowl.

Squeeze half of a small lime (a natural aid for healthy skin), one tablespoon of sugar (a natural AHA)and one table spoon of extra virgin olive oil (a moisturizing emollient and add them to the bowl.

Massage the scrub into the palm of your hand and gently work the product on the backs of your hands, cuticles and fingertips. This recipe makes enough for one use and also doubles as a fab cuticle treatment!

DIY Spa Treatment: Super-Sexy Beach Hair

Fabrice Gilli, my amazing hairdresser and Creative Director of Frederic Fekkai Soho, has divulged one of his quick and easy, at-home recipes for beautiful beach waves. Since you already know how to create this look yourself, and you're aware of the various beach hair products on the market, thanks to Fabrice, you can save a few pennies and stock up on sunscreens instead! Here's an inexpensive way to attain sexy beach waves on a miniscule budget.

Step 1: Take an empty and clean spray bottle and fill it up with eight ounces of water.

Step 2: Add two heaping tablespoons of kosher or sea salt to the water and shake.

Step 3: Mix a teaspoon of your favorite hair gel to the saltwater solution and shake it once again. This will give hair a little bit more texture.

Step 4: Spray a liberal amount onto wet or very damp hair and do not brush through—finger-comb only if necessary. Scrunch hair in your hands to help curls form, or just leave it be and let it air dry naturally.

How To: Make Your Own Apple Pectin Face Toner

For this week's how to, I thought I'd give you a DIY spa treatment for a change. The other day, I came across a few recipes for Apple Pectin Toner, so I decided to whip up an easy version of my own. Here are four simple steps to making your own all-natural face toner.

Take one green apple and cut it into small cubes. Leave the peel on but remove the seeds.

Combine the apple and 1/2 cup lukewarm water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Once it boils, remove from heat and allow it to cool completely.

Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a clean bowl. Stir in 1/4 cup of witch hazel.

Apply the toner with a clean cotton ball, or pour it into an empty spray bottle and spritz on.

Like DIY spa treatments? I have plenty more of them and so does FitSugar, so happy pampering.

Source

I didn't start getting facials until around the time of my wedding. Although they are totally and utterly amazing, I guess I was just always more of a massage person. Spending my hard earned monies on both treatments was just getting too expensive, so I began reading up on mini facials that could be done at home.

I'm not going to lie to you - there's nothing quite like a professional spa facial to help you relax, open up your pores, remove black and whiteheads and polish your face. But when you can only do it professionally every few months, this treatment works great for maintaining a healthy glow.

How To: D.I.Y. Spa Treatment - At Home Blemish Blaster

After reading about the many spot treatments available, I've researched a little at home remedy that won't cost you a lot and will leave your skin free of pestering pimples. All you need is a small bowl of crushed mint leaves and all natural oats. Here's what to do:

Take a handful of fresh mint leaves and pulverize them with a pestle in a bowl.

Next, add moist oats to the mixture and mix until it forms a paste.

Apply evenly to your face, or just to your affected areas, and wait 20 minutes.

Relax and take deep breaths during your waiting time. Allow the oats and the oils to absorb. The mixture should smell delicious and should also do the trick. Apply twice a day as needed storing the remaining mixture in a sealed container in the fridge. I hope this helps!
How To: D.I.Y. Spa Treatment - Great Grape Mask

Here's a treat for those of you who are looking to save a little moolah, but don't want to skimp on your oh so necessary spa indulgences. This is a great do it yourself at home recipe for a quick pick me up grape face masque for under $5. All you need is a pestle and mortar (or a mini Cuisinart) and about two handfuls of red seedless grapes.

Grapes are a well known antioxidant that contain a natural ingredient called pycnogenol which is a skin purifier that helps to deep clean, tighten and refine the tone of your skin.

If your face is lookin' a little tired and you'd like to pep it up, use your fridge for a fast, easy and inexpensive instant fix.

Mash the grapes up good so that they are very fine - almost like a paste.

Use a paintbrush (one that's never been used preferably) with soft bristles and paint your entire face (stay away from your eyes) with the grapes.

Next, lie down for ten minutes and let nature do its thing.

Rinse off with cool water, pat dry and follow with your favorite moisturizer.
