Before each show starts, Madonna spends about 45 minutes in hair and makeup. Of course, she gets touched up in between the show's four segments. When Kate Walsh made her entrance on The Late Show With David Letterman last night, my friend and I audibly gasped. Her super glossy, retro hairstyle perfectly complemented her bright lipstick. In all, the look was very Mad Men, so naturally I'm obsessed. Here's how to get the look:

Blow out hair with a side part, lifting at the roots. Follow with a big curling iron, making sure the barrel isn't too close to your roots. Use a hair spray that provides both shine and hold, like Bumble & bumble Shine Spray ($34).

Line the entire rim of the eye with black liner (it looks like she's wearing pencil to me, but if you've mastered something else, try that) and apply a light grey eyeshadow on the lid, just until the crease. Try Sonia Kashuk Powder Partners Eye Shadow Duo in Cocktail Hour 01 ($7.99). Use your regular black mascara.
Sweep on a hint of peachy blush on the apples of the cheeks, like Benefit Dandelion ($28).
Finding the perfect orange-based red lipstick can be difficult. Experiment by mixing shades you already have, or try Sephora Maniac Long Wearing Lipstick in 09 ($12), a bright orange with red shimmer. A lip liner will help the color stay put, but any neutral color should work to prevent bleeding. Just like Dr. Addison does.

At yesterday's Tommy Hilfiger show, Kruger sported a casually trendy side-swept ponytail with a twist — literally. While we've seen versions of this look just about everywhere lately, her shorter style gives it an effortlessly chic (and sassy) look. For a how-to on achieving this fashionably laid-back style, check out my instructions below:

Blow-dry hair and apply a light/medium hold shine gel like Aveda Brilliant Retexturing Gel ($6 to $16) when your hair is about 80 percent dry. Continue drying using a brush to create texture.
Part your hair to one side (left or right — you choose). Next separate your fringe area. Do this by taking a chunk of hair from the parted side that has more hair, starting at your hairline, and going about two to three inches (right around your ear area). The hair you are gathering now is the hair that will be twisted later, so make sure you have a decent amount. Repeat this step on the lighter side of the part.
Pull remaining hair back into a low-slung ponytail on the opposite side of your part. So, if you parted your hair on the left side, sling the ponytail back to the right.

FACE Start off with a foundation with semimatte coverage (such as Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation [$9.49]). To add instant radiance, use a highlighter to accentuate the under-eye area, forehead, and nose with Benefit's High Beam ($24).
CHEEKS Next, add a peachy accent with Urban Decay's Afterglow Blush in Score ($17) to the apples of the cheeks and around the hairline. Add a slight dusting over your jawline and chin to blend.

Trend Alert: Side-Swept Updos

You weren't so fond of Katherine Heigl's side-swept curls a few weeks ago, but lately I've seen side-swept hair everywhere. Side ponytails remain to be a trend, but why not jazz it up a bit? Sweeping the hair to the side or front in an updo creates a modern style that's interesting and elegant.

To get this look, curl all of your hair with a curling iron or hot rollers first. Use a medium-strength texturizing gel, such as Frederic Fekkai's Coiff Bouffant Lifting and Texturizing Spray Gel ($23), for hold without the crunch. For a straight and sleek option, use a smoothing cream like Bumble and bumble's Styling Lotion $(23). Pin back to the side and set with a light spray such as Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hairspray ($28). For a healthy shine, complete either look with Ojon's Shine & Protect Glossing Mist ($28).

The new issue of Glamour has a lovely photo shoot with Nicole Richie, but what really caught my eye was a quote from Nicole: "The best tip I ever got from a hair pro was to curl my hair with a flat iron." Say what? On second thought, I felt like I may have witnessed this backstage during Fashion Week, but not in the hands of a mere hair novice like myself.

So I fired up a Linea Pro C2 flat iron, which is about as narrow as the barrel of the curling iron I use, determined to end up with elusive Nicole Richie-looking hair. The first thing I noticed was that having to continue to clamp the flat iron while twisting my hair around it was harder than expected. And the resulting curls can only be described as trapezoid-y, with my strands bent into some very unnaturally sharp angles. While I can see that a stylist trying this in one fluid movement (think of curling ribbon) could work, I just ended up wishing my flat iron was round and had a clamp . . . uh, like a curling iron. Brad Pitt Wants To Shower With You

Humina humina! As if it weren't enough to get close to Brad Pitt's lips, now he'd like to take a shower with you. Well, kind of. He's teaming up with Kiehl's to launch a new product, Kiehl's Aloe Vera Biodegradable Liquid Body Cleanser ($16.50). The body wash is free of parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, and dyes — and it's packaged in 100% recycled plastic.

But here's the twist: Brad isn't appearing in any ads, and Kiehl's isn't making a bundle of cash from this deal. Instead, 100 percent of profits will go to JPF Eco Systems, a green charity that Brad created with Kiehl's. WWD estimates that more than $1 million will go to support various ecologically friendly projects, beginning with Make It Right, the post-Katrina charity that helps build green homes in New Orleans. Brad's hands are all over the project, including the label that features his own handwriting.

It's nice to know that Brad's thinking of all of us when we're naked in the shower, isn't it? And it's even better to know that when the cleanser comes out in October, we'll all be able to return the favor while doing good.

Doing Drugstore: Kerry Is So Very . . . Nice

One thing I'm really loving is the way L'Oréal creates products around its spokesmodels. Take, for instance, this Wear Infinite Star Secret eye shadow quad ($7.15). These bronze colors are "Kerry's Bronzes" — as in the actress Kerry Washington — and although I haven't the foggiest idea as to whether she's had any input on the colors, they're very pretty either way. The four shadows all complement each other, and if you have trouble applying them, you can simply flip the package over for some easy-to-follow diagrams.

The Hills are alive... with the sound of charity. This week, I had the chance to chat with Lauren Conrad in New York. You might know that she's a spokesperson for Mark cosmetics, but her partnership with the brand is growing in big ways. Mark has announced a new initiative, m.Powerment, which aims to raise awareness and stop relationship abuse. As part of the program, LC has designed the "Have a Heart" necklace ($22), and all proceeds will go to the cause.

Do you wear makeup every day?
Not when I go to the gym. When I know I have things to do later that night, I know I’m not going to take a shower until later. So I just wash my face and put on deodorant. Other than that, I am super-casual: I walk around LA in flip flops and sweatpants all the time, with my hair on top of my head. I don’t think about it very much until it’s time for me to get ready. If I have meetings or auditions, I am pretty natural, but I do wear makeup. I always wear foundation — I just like the smoothness of it — but it’s always natural. I don’t like to look made-up.

What is the best beauty advice you have ever received?
I used to have crazy skin problems. Everyone always tells you to wear moisturizer, but my biggest beauty secret was that I stopped wearing moisturizer. I had such oily skin that I didn’t need more moisture; it was contributing to my breakouts. So I swear by anti-bacterial soap, under-eye cream, and at night a glycolic layer over my face. And stay away from moisturizer if you have oily skin.

Yesterday at the Australians in Film Breakthrough Awards, actress Abbie Cornish arrived on the red carpet with chestnut brown hair — a far cry from her typical pale blond color. I'm not familiar with Abbie's work, so it's hard for me to judge her based on talent. Unfortunately, I know her best as the woman behind Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe's breakup — not the sort of unsavory reputation I'm sure she'd hoped for.
