Beauty Mark It! Bubble Baths

My mom was never really too strict. Ho-Hos and "pop" in the lunchbox? Cookie Crisp for breakfast? Yep, it was allowed. But, when it came to bubble baths, that's where she drew the line. Thanks to an overzealous dumping of an entire box of Mr. Bubble ($3.09) back in the early '80s, my sister and I were banned from sudsy baths for years.

Now, as an adult, I take bubble baths as often as I can — but this time around with a glass of wine and some candles. All that's missing is a little Kenny G. (I kid.) The term "cheap perfume" doesn't exactly have positive connotations. But just because it might cost less, does that mean a fragrance should be discredited? Nope — there are plenty of good ones lumped into the inexpensive category.

Whenever there is a shift in weather patterns, I feel like there is a major shift in my hair's behavior patterns. Right now, I'm experiencing some limp, lifeless hair. Does this happen to you, too?

Beauty Mark It! Hair Removal

Back in ancient Egyptian times, it was common practice for people to remove hair over their entire bodies to prevent fleas, lice, and parasites from sticking around. Makes sense to me. Fast forward to current times, and it's mostly about aesthetics or social values. This also makes sense, I suppose, but I still hate shaving nonetheless.

So, for this week's Beauty Mark It challenge, I'm asking you to review hair-removal tools. Whether it's a shaver, an epilator, or a wax-at-home kit, tell me what you think, and I'll post my favorites next Tuesday. Beauty Mark It! Eyeliner

It's said that eyeliner was used on the eyes of Ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians, who applied black lines for practical purposes (keeping sun out of eyes) and aesthetic effects (à la Cleopatra). Fast forward to modern times, and eyeliner is still rocking it, with just a few more shades than kohl black.

This leads me to the Beauty Mark It challenge. Each week I've been asking you to share your opinions on our growing Product Reviews site, where you can add your thoughts on everything from shampoo to Brazilian wax kits.

Beauty Mark It! Marvelous Masks

Taking the extra five to ten minutes (OK, hour) to let a facial mask work its magic is one of life's simple pleasures for me. Except, I swear that the doorbell always rings during the process. "That's all right ma'am," said the UPS delivery guy, as I apologized for my most recent goopy green face application. "I've seen it all," he said.

Minor embarrassment aside, I just love the results and feel of masks, whether they be creamy, gel-like, clarifying, acne fighting, or firm inducing. And since we switched up the format of the Beauty Mark It challenges last week with much success, let's do the same thing again this week, with face masks.

I'm totally convinced that Mr. Bella will never understand the purpose of "face paint," as he calls it. Used to even out skin tone and conceal imperfections, foundation creates a base for the rest of your makeup. Consider him informed.

I recall a makeup artist telling me something along the lines of, "Once you get a client hooked on a foundation, they're yours forever." You know, I'm thinking she was right, because let's face it — once you find your ultimate foundation, it's like you've hit the beauty jackpot forever.

Beauty Mark It! Growing the Hair Out Gracefully

We've all been there before — the dreaded "growing out the hair" plight. Perhaps you donated your tresses to an organization that helps women who have lost their own hair. Or maybe it's all because you were sporting a stylish pixie or the trendy graduated bob, and now you've decided that it's time to change it up a bit. Yep, been there.

Whatever your situation might entail, growing out your hair might not be so bad after all. In fact, I can't think of a more perfect time to experiment with new braids, accessories, and products.

Beauty Mark It! An "Un" Beauty Vacation

Next month, I'm going on a much-needed vacation to beautiful Central America to see the picturesque countries of Guatemala and Belize. No doubt it will be a completely different world than my current fast-paced location of New York Fashion Week. I won't be packing my Shady Lady, and I won't be applying any fancy face serums either. Blow dryer and flat iron? Not needed.

It's going to be hot and humid where I'm traveling, and since it's just me, I'll be packing very light. Most of my days and nights will be spent exploring the history, natural beauty, and culture of each country, so I need my minimized beauty routine to be simple and condensed.

I'll get you started with Avon's Skin So Soft Bug Guard Towelettes ($6). These travel-friendly cloths will help ensure that the mosquitoes eat — um, whatever lovely things they eat, and not me. Do you ever watch makeovers on What Not To Wear? Loyal fans will know that makeup artist Carmindy continually touts the importance of an eye brightener to conceal and lighten up the appearance of darkness around the eyes. Naturally, I've been a firm believer of her theory, but lately, the brand I've been using just doesn't seem to work as well as it used to for my skin.

While browsing over the long weekend, I became overwhelmed by all of the choices. I found a few potential winners, but after applying layer after layer of brighteners, the effect was more sunglasses tan and I was starting to get kinda dizzy.

I'll get you started with Benefit's Eye Bright ($20), "a pop of pink that brightens your eyes and your spirits instantaneously." I liked the buildable, creamy texture — and the color hid my dark spots nicely.

In a few weeks, Fab and I will be jetting out to New York City to attend 2009 Spring/Summer Fashion Week. Good times. I'm starting to put a fashion and beauty game plan together for what looks I'll be sporting at the various shows. Since I'll be surrounded by intimidating fashion types, I want my look to be both stylish and approachable. It's got to be professional, yet creatively sassy; trendy, but effortless. What beauty products would you recommend for my upcoming trip?

I've already packed Stila's Long Wearing Lipcolor ($18) in Paramour, a deep plum red. The color is fashion-y, but not over the top. Plus, with all of the long days ahead, I love that this long-lasting shade will provide me with hours spent near the runway, rather than in the ladies' room doing touch-ups.

I recently confessed that I haven't yet found a shampoo that delivers the shimmering shine that is ubiquitously displayed in every hair commercial on television. I did, however, find the next best thing: Shu Uemura's Satin Design styling lotion. I love it so much that it's now a part of my blow-drying routine. But on those days when time is of the essence, I would love to pack all of that shine into a shampoo.

Beauty Mark It! Can't Live Without

As a product junkie, I've got quite an addiction to all things beauty. It all started with my first beauty purchase, but over the years I've acquired a bathroom chock full of goodies. Some may go as far as to call it hoarding. No, the problem isn't as severe as what I saw recently on a rerun of Oprah, but, yes, I could probably live with less.

This got me thinking, if I had to survive with just one product, what would it be? Of course the easy answer is sunblock, but I'd like to think in this fantasy that the sun isn't harmful. Therefore, I think I'd have to choose mascara. How else am I supposed to smile with my eyes like Tyra? My current favorite is TheBalm's Two Timer as its dual brushes offer two rather distinct looks. Versatility is key in this dream (or, should I say, nightmare?). What's your choice?

Beauty Mark It! A Summer Scent

Beauty routines aren't static. The dynamic nature of the environment we live in requires us to adjust to outside forces. Humidity brings out the frizz, the heat causes perspiration and our hair and makeup choices have to accommodate. But one beauty regimen that doesn't necessarily need to adhere to the weather is fragrance. There is nothing inherently wrong with wearing a floral, more airy perfume in the Winter or a woodsy, heavier version in the Summer. That being said, I can't help myself from switching scents each season.

This Summer I fell in love with Bobbi Brown's Beach fragrance. If you recall, I gave it away last month in our big, beachy giveaway, and let's just say that it was hard for me to see it go. Do you do the scent switch-out, too? If so, what are you wearing this Summer?

Next week will be celebrating Independence Day on July 4. Yes, 232 years ago we declared independence from Great Britain. This got me thinking about different types of freedom, mostly of the George Michael kind, but also the freedom of first being able to wear makeup.

I had definitely experimented with Bonne Belle's Smackers in the Dr. Pepper flavor, but my first true makeup purchase was Cover Girl's Lipslicks. I can't remember which color I tried, but the packaging is bringing back memories of junior high.

Beauty Mark It! Great Gifts For Dad

Now that you're in the know, you've got less than two weeks to purchase the perfect present for pop. If your dad is anything like mine, you know how difficult it is to shop for him. For my pick, I'm going with the Great Shave Kit by Clinique. I like this particular kit because it's relatively inexpensive at $28, and it's got three products that I think my dad will enjoy: face scrub, shave gel, and after shave. Beauty Mark It! MTV Movie Awards Makeover

This Sunday is the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, an awards show best known for its crazy categories (best kiss!) and even crazier antics. That's why if there's one night to get dressed up but not take yourself too seriously, this is it. Take a cue from Rihanna and Victoria Beckham; last year they upped the drama with edgy haircuts and playful makeup. In honor of the most outrageous of all award shows, I'm challenging you to bookmark beauty items that you would wear on Sunday night.

I'll start you off with nail polish from OPI's latest Mod About Brights collection. Specifically, I'm targeting the That's Hot Pink shade because it captures the pink trend that's happening right now. Also you've got to love the name because it is a play on Paris Hilton's catch phrase, who incidentally went to jail right after last year's MTV Movie Awards. As if I haven't blathered on about it enough, I'm going to say it again: I love blush! Cream, powder, gel, stick, pot, you name it. I always grab the brightest and most garish pink because its the prettiest to my eye, but it can sometimes be a disaster on me. Since it's Spring, there's no better time than now to add a fresh pop of color to those cheeks, so I'm using it as an excuse to stock up on blush galore!

Beauty Mark It! The Best Eye Makeup Remover

I've got a really important challenge for everyone this week. I recently ran out of my eye makeup remover, and I am desperate for a new one. I've been using my longtime favorite, Lancome Bi-Facil, but I am ready for a change. My requirements are that it must remove every last smudge of mascara and liquid liner, but that it is gentle on my sensitive eyes and not require too much tugging or rubbing to be effective. I'm not partial to oil, water, gel or cream-based removers, as long as it works! So, I'm turning the decision-making process over to you, and I can't wait to share your favorites next Tuesday.

Beauty Mark It! A Volumizing Shampoo

Big hair is a big trend right now, and having the right tools will help you get high. (What? I'm talking about your hair!) While some volumizing shampoos don't deliver, others do a great job of giving you fluffy — but not frizzy — hair. The last one I really loved is Lush Big ($19.95). It's unusual because it uses sea salt and seaweed, plus lemon and lime juice. (It's an oceany margarita like that.) It lathers up like crazy, and leaves my hair bouncy and shiny.

Beauty Mark It! Cool Stocking Stuffers Under $10

Along with the holiday gift guides I've been putting together, I thought it would be fun to come up with a few inexpensive stocking stuffers. This set from C.O. Bigelow is my pick because it's cute, retro, and affordable. The Soda Fountain Mini Mentha Lip Shine Trio ($10) contains three milkshake-flavored lip shines in Vanilla Malt, Double Chocolate and Strawberry Shake. (Double Chocolate smells the best.) They're a little tingly, and they moisturize while adding sheer shine. On its own, it's already a budget buy—but if you divvy up the three lip shines, it's downright cheap.

So that's my suggestion for a beauty stocking stuffer that costs less than a ten-spot. I'm sure you have tons of ideas, too.
