How to Make Lotion 100 Times Better

Make lotion better? I know what you're thinking: "Oh, but how could lotion ever become better than it already is? Why, it's already at the zenith of moisturizing properties!" In just a minute, you'll understand. About a week ago, I headed to Bliss for a pedicure. What a treat! The best part isn't the luxury of sitting back while somebody rubs your feet; it's how that person does it. And at Bliss, they heat the lotion before slathering it on your worn-out feet and legs. Let me tell you, it's one of the most amazing feelings your legs will ever experience. So warm, so soothing.

Now, until Milo learns how to give a proper pedicure, I'm on my own as far as re-creating this warm goodness at home. I fiddled around with the microwave and different containers, so to find out the sweet spot for heating your moisturizer, read more.

Here's how to make the magic happen. First, find a small microwave-safe bowl. I used these bowls, a gift from Geek, but a nonmetallic shot glass would work, too. Put just a tiny bit of your moisturizer in the container and microwave it for 10 seconds. If all goes well, your lotion will be intact. If the oils separate, use a different one. (I first tried Kai, but the formula separated. I used Bliss body butter and all went well.) When you're sure that your moisturizer can handle the heat, squirt a little more in the container, then let 'er heat for 10 to 15 seconds. The lotion should be warm but not hot. Apply it to your skin and enjoy the sensation. Seriously, this is such a simple trick, but it transforms even the most quotidian thing into a little luxury. If you try it out, let me know what you think.

It's super-simple, a total "Why didn't I think of that?!" thing. But I guarantee, when you do this, it turns a kinda boring event into total luxury time. Just be sure to keep it from overheating.

"Why, it's already at the zenith of moisturizing properties"

Bella, that is the best line ever.

I already do this with the milk and honey mask, and it's awesome. In the wintertime, though- I always put on lotion after a shower. I don't know that I could be coaxed into leaving my warmed-up bathroom to sprint across my cold, cold house to nuke some lotion.

Actually, it just occurred to me- I suppose you could heat the lotion up in the microwave, stick the little bowl of warm lotion into a larger bowl filled with hot water so it would stay warm during the shower- right?

I'm going to have to try that and see if it works.

Bookish, yep, I bet you could do that — just MacGyver a bain marie.

Make it 100x more natural and use olive oil or jojoba oil.
    No ingredients you can't pronounce.

If you just want warm lotion after a shower, just keep the tube in the shower with you, or run hot water in the sink right on the bottle/tube. I have to do this with my pure cocoa butter. I am pregnant and heard it's very good at keeping stretchmarks (it worked with my first pregnancy) at bay, but unfortunately pure cocoa butter is solid at room temp, so I have to warm it.

I think it feels a lot better when someone else is rubbing it in. I love pedicures.

or you could do a sort of double boiler thing. ya know, stick the bottle of lotion in the sink w/ hot water. that way, it wouldn't get too hot.

this is such a good idea, but i always put my lotion on right out of the shower too. i'll have to try running it under the water or putting it in the sink double-boiler style before i put it on!

No need to go through all of that trouble, if you have a lotion warmer. You can keep it in your bathroom & turn it on when you need it. It only takes 60 seconds to heat mine.

My girlfriend bought me one four years ago. I thought she was nuts, but I love it & I've used it every winter since. It is made by Conair.

Can anybody tell me if the lotion is supposed to come out thinner after you warm it up? Or is the lotion supposed to stay the same consistency after you warm it up? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying this with St. Ives Collagen Elastin Lotion but it thins out after I warm it up. Not sure if its supposed to do that or if I should try a different lotion.

Like PJ i got one as a gift. It is an okay concept if you like the liquid type lotions. I actually prefer the body butters and they can't go into the dispenser.
