Doing Drugstore: Neutrogena Wave Power Cleanser

Last week I told you a bit about the new Neutrogena Wave power cleanser ($13.99), a handheld vibrating cleanser. The kit comes with 14 single-dose cleansing pads, the Wave unit itself, and a postcard for an online coupon.

The Wave is designed well; it's easy to grip in hands, even when a little bit of water splashes on it. Its attachment head has tiny Velcro-like grippers that securely hold the cleansing pads. To find out how well it works, read more

For an inexpensive gizmo, this cleans pretty well. My face feels soft after using it, and it refreshed my skin without drying it out. The menthol in the cleansing pads makes skin feel tingly, and the salicylic acid should help keep pimples at bay.

But as some of you have pointed out, a one-use cleansing pad is pretty wasteful. YumSugar caught me washing my face in the loo, and when I showed her the pads, she mentioned that she didn't like the scent. I agree; it's a little too sharply soapy. And if you have easily irritated skin, watch out: Sodium laureth sulfate is the second ingredient, so don't use this if you have sensitive skin.

So, should you buy it? It depends. It's not a dud product, but it's not an absolute must-buy, either. Personally, I have a feeling the novelty would wear off quickly, and I'd be back to washing with a cloth before long. But your mileage may vary.

(For what it's worth, the more prurient-minded among you may notice that this is a handheld, buzzing, vibrating gadget. So, you know, it might be something to look into if you're going home for the holidays and you need to pack a discreet stress-relieving product. What? I'm just sayin'.)

I'm sure it's not what they had in mind, but everyone here keeps asking me if that's what it is! It had to be said! Eye-wink

Glad that it's working so well for you, Nikkipez. I do think it does a good job of making skin soft.

Good to know about the sodium laureth sulfate, I won't be able to use it, and I am laughing about the vibrating gadget comment.

I would try it, but I don't like that the pads have a strong scent and contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate. I am pretty sure that's the "bad" stuff in shampoo that I avoid. I don't want a facial cleanser that has it.

Studies on SLS have shown that:" (Judi Vance, Beauty To Die For, Promotion Publishing, 1998)

1."Shampoos with SLS could retard healing and keep children's eyes from developing properly. Children under six years old are especially vulnerable to improper eye development. (Summary of Report of Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. conference."

2."Sodium Lauryl Sulphate can cause cataracts in adults and delays the healing of wounds in the surface of the cornea."

3."Sodium Lauryl Sulphate has a low molecular weight and so is easily absorbed by the body. It builds up in the heart, liver and brain and can cause major problems in these areas."

4."Sodium Lauryl Sulphate causes skin to flake and to separate and causes roughness on the skin."

5."Sodium Lauryl Sulphate causes dysfunction of the biological systems of the skin."

6."Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is such a caustic cleanser that it actually corrodes the hair follicle and impairs the ability to grow hair."

7."Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is routinely used in clinical studies deliberately to irritate the skin so that the effects of other substances can be tested."

I can't stand these vibrating face cleansers. What is better about a vibrating face scrubber except that it makes you want to use it more often and possible for longer each time, and that it may stimulate your cells and wake them up? So could gently slapping one's face! Smiling I'll stick to the Clarisonic brush.

I can't stand the smell of soapy things they make me feel like I ate a mouthful of soap. My skin usually overreacts to it too.

I have very dry skin, and it would probably make it even dryer. I like the idea behind the product, but I probably wouldn't use it unless they developed one that was specifically for my skin type.

Oooh, Bella, you dirty dirty girl. Lol.

I'm thinking of getting it, only because I have bad acne issues (I am guilty of being a bar soap scrubber.) and I'm hoping this can resolve it.

Blah, I just thew mine away. I get much better results with a weekly face scrub - and without all the synthetic ingredients! I love the Suki lemongrass scrub - I use it once a week and afterwards spray a Pangeo Organics toner on my face. The best skincare regimen I've ever had!

Really, skip this, it's totally not worth it.

i just got the pink one today at cvs!! It was 13.99 but i had a coupon that took off 2 dollars so it came out to be 11.99 not bad a least i saved 2 dollars to buy more scrubing pads which are very expensive they cost 7.99 but then again i had a coupon which took off 3 dollars not bad !!! Saved $5.00 dollars today.I used it as soon as i got home i ended up getting two pimples but they were smaller so i think what the wave does is make them come out and let no more come out . So far i liked it my face was shiny and smooth but the shiny goes away!! It'a a real good product mad my brother want to buy it!!

I picked one of these up a few weeks ago (I got the purty blue one!). It was totally an impulse purchase on my way to the checkout counter at Target. (I can't remember the price right now -- but it was a bonus pack with one or two extra packs of the facial pads). I LOVE this thing! It doesn't vibrate too hard -- so I don't feel like I'm ripping off layers, instead of exfoliating. It definately give a DEEP down clean!

THIS THING ROCKS! omg! I bought one and after the FIRST use, My face was like a zillion times smoother and softer! It's totally worth it if you have bumpy skin. Due to the SLS, i'll probably only be using it when I need to get rid of those little hard whiteheads, other than that I'll stick to my regular routine! Sticking out tongue

in response to aimeeb's comment on SLS... sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is very different than sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), despite having similar names. SLES which is in this product is much, much gentler than SLS, which is a very harsh surfactant.

An exfoliating wash cloth (got mine from Target years ago) will work just as nicely and they are reuseable.

Funny how things work differently for different people. I have fought complexion problems for many years. I have tried about all there is out there for large, clogged pores, and breakouts. ProActiv was a total disaster. Nothing seemed to work well, till I found the Wave about 2 weeks ago. I could tell a difference after the first use in pore size and softness. It did dry my face out initially, but I kept going because it was making a noticeable difference in the pores. Now my skin is soft, pores much decreased in size, skin less lumpy, no new breakouts (existing pimples did heal very slowly, tho). My face has not looked so good in years. I am freaking out because I cannot find refills and the ones that came with the gadget will be gone soon. Can't believe it has made such a big difference in such a short time. I would like for it to lather quicker. I would also like to know which Neutrogena product is in the pads.

hahah product that is two in one Eye-wink hahah niiceeee
i was wondering if it would screw a little with my skin since it is very sensitive and i have to use extra gentle cleansers. Most of the deep cleaning products make me break out or over dry my skin.
