If you're going out for a night on the town and you want to look your sexiest, the surest way to achieve that look through makeup is with a smoky eye. The standard smoky eye look is created using heavy black or dark charcoal colors, but now cosmetics companies are also creating deep hues of blues and purples to play up your eye color and really make you look irresistible. (Tune in later today to read about the best smoky eye kits.) Here's how to get the look.

  • Start by applying an eyeshadow primer to your entire eyelid, then sweep the lightest color in the palette all over your eye.
  • Next, apply a medium eyeshadow shade from your lash line to the crease of your eye and blend well.
  • Then, use your crease brush to gently apply the darkest to your crease. Again, blend well.

  • If desired, dab a light amount of sheer shimmer shadow to your brow bone.
  • Draw a thin line with your eyeliner very close to your lashes. For a smokier look, smudge the line, or leave it untouched for a more defined effect.
  • For a finishing touch, line the inner rims of you lower eyelid.
  • Finally, add two coats of black mascara to really smoke em' out.

Keep in mind that when you have a heavy eye, you'll want to aim for light, flawless skin with a touch of bronzer and pale blush. Also, be sure to downplay your lips by using a light, nude lip color.

    I love smokey eyes!

However I have blue-grey eyes and black is too harsh. So I always do I grey or brown smokey look instead.

I love when people do a smokey look in anything but black its such a nice little surprise.

I have brown eyes, and I usually use browns. I think the black looks severe even on me!

    I love smoky eyes!

Hint: My best friend has pale blue eyes and blonde hair and she does hers with dark, shimmery blues and it looks gorgeous! I have brown eyes and brown hair, so i can use brown or even the charcoals in the evening.

i like to do mine in either a dark navy blue pallette or a dark forest green pallette, the hue of my eye changes with each one...the blues make them bluer, the greens make them greener...and i have dark brown hair, so the darker colors don't clash, but sometimes i do use black just for a dramatic flair Smiling

Smokey eyes are my favorite! Love them!

Vintagesugar, you don't have to be gorgeous for smokey eyes...most everyone has beautiful eyes. Play 'em up.

Here's a tip to set your make up!

Before leaving for a party/dinner date/etc give yourself a 5 minute facial with the steam from hot water. Do this about half and hour before you leave and your skin will be glowing with that dewy look (dab any perspiration or oil with a blotting pad) and go! Your make up will last longer and people will notice your "glow". Laughing out loud

If u find black eye shadow too severe for your smoky eye, try using other dark colors like dark burgundies, plums, greens, browns and blues. For brown eyes like mine, I especially love using plums, greens and blues, it makes brown eyes appear even browner. Also, if u still want black in ur smoky eye, you can put black on ur lids, then apply the colorful dark shadows I just mentioned on the crease area and lowerv lashline.
