Doing Drugstore: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

Talk with any beauty editor or dermatologist, and chances are, they'll recommend Cetaphil ($10.47). The gentle line of face cleansers and lotions is favored for its ability to dissolve dirt without overdrying skin. And yet, I never tried the cleanser until this year.

I'm glad I finally did, because I've found an affordable everyday cleanser. The great thing about Cetaphil is that it doesn't overpromise. It just does what, at a basic level, a cleanser is supposed to do: get rid of the dirt and excess oil. I'm not crazy about the scent, which is ever-so-vaguely reminiscent of a doctor's office; then again, the fragrance is pretty soft, so unless you're mentally taking notes (for, say, your Doing Drugstore review), it probably won't bother you. For people with sensitive skin, or anyone who's lucky enough to have low-maintenance skin, you really can't go wrong.

Sure, I love fancy cleansers because their packaging is sleeker, or they have wonderful scents—and truthfully, I'll probably continue to try those out from time to time. But I'll have a hard time finding something as good at this price, that's for sure.

I ran out of my Dr. Brandt poreless cleanser and have been using my tub of regular old Noxzema. My skin is really fickle --- it either explodes in pimples or dries to ash --- so I may have to give this a shot. I've ALWAYS heard about it but, like you, have never actually tried it before.

My derm recommended Cetaphil, since my skin is acne prone too... She didn't say which one, though. I think one is just regular and the other is for sensitive skin... ??

I use the Gentle Skin Cleanser because my skin is sometimes a little sensitive. (I have combination skin.) If you have very oily skin, go with the Daily Facial Cleanser, which is for normal to oily complexions.

Neekoh, I'll have to try the moisturizer. I've been using a fancypants one as of late, but I think it's doing something to my skin... not sure if that "something" is good or not!

Cetaphil Daily facial cleanser (not the bottle above) was my everyday staple for a few years. It's the right one for acne prone or normal to oily skin. It cleansed my skin and it didn't leave my face feeling harsh. A couple months ago, I'm not sure what happened, maybe my skin got too accustomed to it, but it felt like it wasn't cleansing my skin like it used to. I've since switched to Philosophy's Purity Made Simple and I'm in love. But I still have my Cetaphil in the cabinet just in case I run out. I would definitely recommend Cetaphil as the best drugstore cleanser.

LOVE the original gentle skin cleanser! I've used it for 15 years! Right now I'm just using it in the morning because I use DHC cleansing oil to take off sunscreen at night, but you can also use it at night and use a moisturizing toner like Nivea's afterwards to get all the makeup off. It's also a GREAT eye makeup remover used on a cotton pad!

I've been using cetaphil since i read about it in various fashion mags as a favorite low-cost facewash. I LOVE it and I haven't turned back since!!!

I don't think it smells bad- reminds me more of a bar soap smell than a doctor's office.

I haven't really tried the moisterizer, but maybe I should since it got a good review Eye-wink

Ps. I've tried maaaany face washes and they've all made me break out one way or another. So frustrating! This is the first one I've used since I was a teenager that actually feels like it clears up my face =)

I want to run to the drugstore right now and pick some Cetaphil up! I always look at it, but then go with something else; but I'm definitely in the market for a new cleanser. With these 100+ degree temps, I need something to get all the sweat off!

I tried using the Cetaphil but I stopped after only a few usage because I don't like the smell, the texture on the skin and it takes too long to rinse off.

Target has a store brand "Cetaphil" and it works just as great as the original. Costs a lot less, too!

They can't add scents because it can irritate sensitive skin. In addition, try the lotion if you need moisture that won't clog your pores!

I love Cetaphil. And vienvien, I'm not sure why yours took a while to rinse of. A couple splashes and I'm good to go.

I use Proactiv once a day and Cetaphil once a day. I used only Cetaphil before but my skin kind of went nuts after moving to the South. I've always had dry skin but after moving here the dryness and humidity gave me sensitive, dry, and blackhead filled skin. EEW. So I started on the Proactiv and use to Cetaphil to balance it out and restore some of the moisture.

I use the gentle skin cleanser and moisturizer; I'm using Benzeclin so my skin can flake easily and those products help prevent that. I also use Peter Thomas Roth scubs to rid the dead skin. So far it's helping out.

I used to use Cetaphil but it made me break out Sad But I use Johnson & Johnson's Purpose face cleanser and it works really well, and it's cheap too!

a sneaky instant exfoliating scrub - add a pinch of baking soda to a couple squirts of cetaphil and let the baby-bottom skin emerge!

The Purpose SPF Moisturizer is good too, and it's Oil-Free and like $10. No I don't work for Johnson's & Johnson's LOL, it's just I've tried everything in the market and this is the one that works for me. Everyone is different, unfortunately, you have to keep trying until you find the right one.

And in the summer I use Colorscience Mineral SPF Powder in California Girl...because even though the Purpose moisturizer is oil-free, on humid, summer days it still feels too slick.

I use the Target-brand version (EXACTLY the same, just at a lower price) and it's great. I always felt like my old cleansers left build-up or never left my face feeling "clean", so this is my new favorite product!

Cetaphil is awesome!!! It completely cleared up my skin and changed my complexion. My face is smooth and soft and I very rarely have a terrible break-outs. It also washes away make-up without overdrying. Get it in the pump bottle and it lasts longer. It washes right off and doesn't leave any residue behind, which is great. And erm, the normal to oily wash is a clear liquid, almost like the consistency of hand soap, so there should be no texture. I'm a complete Cetaphil convert.

I couldn't go on without Cetaphil moisturizer! ...seriously, I think my face would just flake right off.

I have super-dry, yet acne prone skin that's also alergic to many products. This is the only moisturizer I can use that keeps my skin from drying out but doesn't clog up the pores.

Love it!! Every time I go to the states, I buy in bulk and bring it back to Europe.

I've tried it and I think it is for people who don't wear as much makeup as me - it didn't seem to ever get it all off. A drugstore one I like that derms recommend is Purpose cleanser. It even removes mascara!

I've been using Cetaphil for a while now. I'm not sure if I notice any difference or improvement in my skin. It cleanses but it doesn't actually improve skin tone.

ah, I swear by this stuff and it needs to be for sensative skin. twice a day and you're skin is amazing, it glows and is smooth and soft.

if ever you find your skin not as soft as you want it or glowing as much as usual use lush's brazen honey! it smells a bit strongly of flowers but it's also amazing stuff. (:

I have very sensitive skin and this is the only cleanser I've ever used that doesn't make me break out. I have been using it for years and I couldn't live without it! I also love the fact that you can use it without water, because whenever I clean my face with water I always end up soaked with a huge mess! lol
