Is the Economy Affecting Your Beauty Purchases?

Would you believe that we're not technically in a recession? According to the government, we're not — but most people I know are watching their pennies pretty closely. And yet, it seems like stores are still drawing shoppers. Is the economy affecting the way you spend on beauty?

It doesn't affect my purchases but I have a general philosophy that I use all the time of only allowing myself to look at stuff in Sephora that I totally need- e.g. I was there last night and wanted to buy the Tend Skin product that was reviewed here- at the same time I really wanted to get a new cheek stain but I restrained myself bc I didn't need a new cheek stain- not bc of recession but just out of a general sense of being a smart shopper and not over-shopping. Although I do try to do my beauty errands in one sweep as to save on the gas driving out to Sephora, Target, Beauty Brand which are close together and I try to make one trip.

Ive always been a little money concious a few things, but my Kiehl's skin care regiment I could never cut back on! It's something that's too important, but using CVS oil-free eye make remover(rather than Kiehls), cheap mascara(that I love love love), and only buying my bareminerals and eye colors when I run out are ways that I try to save on a regular basis. I love make up but I'm more of a "why buy it when I'll barely use it" kind of person.

I need my beauty products. A little goes a long way. It is a good investment for my looks.

Yes..Unfortunately, I can't spend $75 on MD Skincare's Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel. I bought it once..and probably won't be able to afford it again for awhile. Thank God it's the only thing I've run out of so far..I have everything else I really need for my skin care regimen. As far as make-up goes, I do need to buy a new foundation..I'm definitely not looking forward to going into Sephora. There's sooooo much I'd like to buyyy and try!!

I've definitely been buying less. It's already hard enough since I'm in college and I only have part time job. The price of groceries has gone up, gas, everything is just more expensive, so I definitely have less money to spend on things I don't absolutely need like makeup.

This is why I need another job in cosmetics! LOL. I'm still Becky Bloomwood when it comes to Sephora but it's harder now. Sacrifices have to be made. My boyfriend said it's worth it though because at least to me, it's a main source of entertainment. I love all of it.

I love revlon's raisin glaze lip gloss in brown and thats $6.00. I can never use cheap facial cleanser and moisturizer. I will shell out the cash for cetaphil because it does wonders. I also need my $10.00 face scrub from lush. My bf can complain all he wants but I insist on having a smooth, pimple free face. I did stop using the $20 body butter and now use the $3.00 baby oil gel which moisturizing just fine and I save a few dollars in the process.

The economy affects all of my purchases especially entertainment, beauty, clothes and things of that nature. I am very frugal with money as it is so add in the rising costs of food, gas, and living and I become even cheaper!

Heck yeah! I cannot buy my Bumble and Bumble anymore because $60-70 on a conditioner is alot of money to spend. I cannot splurge the way I used to. I want to buy the rest of the MAC Sci-Fi collection and the Cool Heat, but.... not feasible.

Two things are affecting my purchases: the economy and only buying what I need. The latter is like the decision to give up coffee -- it only works for so long!

I'm with cmill38. I don't mind using drugstore products at all, and in my city all the malls are way out in the most rural areas, so I'll only drive out in order to buy my clinique 3-step skincare items! Other than that, I'm fine with old-fashioned Maybelline and Neutrogena Smiling

I'm always a cheapo beauty junkie. I go to Sephora only as necessary, which is surprisingly frequently. Did you all know that target was carrying Tweezerman products for a while there? I got a sharp point tweezers and an extractor for like, 3 bucks each, on clearance!

The reason the government still says we aren't technically in a recession isn't because we aren't, but because a recession is something that can only be technically defined once it's already happened (or at least, has been happening for quite a while)--a decline in GDP for at least two consecutive quarters.

So it's one of those things where in like a couple months they'll be like, "Guess what?? We're in a recession!" and we'll all be like... yeah. really. anyways. sorry if that was annoying, but I'm an econ nerd =P

I've actually spent more lately, but maybe that's because my parents are the ones working...

No... I guess that's what happens when you get money from your parents. But then again, I'm pretty cheap. I only splurge on lip gloss, sunscreen and mascara. Cetaphil works fine for me so I don't have to splurge on cleansers.

Free shipping is EVERYTHING right now! That's money saved on gas.

I also mostly hold out for Friends and Family sales. I hate paying full price.

I hate paying full price too! And I almost never order anything unless there's free shipping. Even when I buy drugstore products, I wait until they're having a BOGO sale. I really need to start cutting back on buying extras though Sad

Hmph. Everything is twice the price in the UK then it is stateside. And now the prices are going up EVEN more, so it means curbing the spending to whatever I need the most. *sighs*...ah, well....

Yes. I used to experiment with lots of products even the $150 one. But now, as much as I could, I tried to find ways to get them at a lower price through discount coupons or free samples. But those that don't offer them , I just have to live without. I used Lancome and Estee Lauder and even NuSkin before but now no more. Currently I'm using Olay Regenerist and Principal Secret Reclaim of which I'm a subscriber. I have set a budget for all my skincare and beauty products that each month should not exceed $70.

big time. my sephora trips are few and far between. to make up for it, i've been utilizing swap communities to get rid of things i don't use, and trade for new products or gift cards. it's been nice, since i don't have the funds to purchase new things otherwise.

I don't have a lot of money to spend at Sephora or even at the drugstore. I have tons of makeup so right now I'm trying to use some stuff up so when I finally do have enough money I'll be able to go crazy.
