Titanium dioxide is a mineral that is commonly found in food coloring, toothpaste, paint, and sunblock. It absorbs UV light at a high capacity, it doesn't break down in the heat of the sun, it's gentle on the skin without leaving white traces and it creates a physical barrier against rays making it a sunblock, not just a sunscreen. Therefore it is often present in SPF for children and those with sensitive skin. Also, since it is encapsulated inside of a silicone molecule, the application is smooth and lightweight.

However, there is controversy surrounding titanium dioxide because of its possible link to cancer in humans. The argument for it is that it still blocks cancer-causing UVA and UVB rays, making it safer to use than nothing at all. For those of you who are looking for a titanium-dioxide free sunscreen until more conclusive evidence is released, check out these options.

Doesn't your Dermalogica recommendation have Titanium Dioxide in it?

    Oil free matte block spf20

Shield skin from damaging UV rays and control oil production with this invisible sunscreen. Microsponge technology absorbs oil, maintaining an all-day matte finish and preventing shine without any powdery residue. Oil-free formula contains soothing Green Tea to help calm inflammation caused by breakouts. Contains no artificial fragrance or color.

    how it works
    # Ultra-fine porcelain particles of Titanium Dioxide combined with chemical sunscreens provide optimum UVA and UVB protection.
    # UV Smart Booster Technology enhances photoprotection with antioxidant vitamins C and E that scavenge UV-induced free radicals any time skin is exposed to daylight.
    # Cornstarch and Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer act as microsponges to absorb excess surface oils on skin.

the only sunscreens i can use are one's with titanium dioxide so lets hope this is unfounded. i can only hope my chance of getting cancer from using the sunscreen with titanium dioxide is smaller then my chances of getting skin cancer by not using it.

Titanium dioxide makes for a better sunBLOCK though right?

What would you suggest for ethnic women who want to shield themselves from cancer but prevent tanning as well? I always look for the highest titanium dioxide content (the highest i've found is in Clinique Super City Block) in order to prevent tanning but now you're scaring me!

    What are our options?

I'm another one that can't use ANY of the chemical sunscreens because of allergic reactions so I have to use sunblocks that have titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in them. I use Clinique Super City Block. Seems like just about everything on the planet causes cancer so what are we to do?

Plus, I'm not sure I trust a site that the link goes to. They're pushing their products and a propaganda. I think I'll wait for an official and proper scientific study before I give up sunscreen and 'just stay inside during the day.' ???
