How-To: Shagadelic Hair

Meg Ryan (with the help of Sally Hershberger) first made the shaggy hairstyle famous back in the '90s, and this style is now more popular than ever. Celebrities like Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, and Cameron Diaz all opt for this low-maintenance look. It's a great style for summertime since it doesn't require a lot of effort and it's fairly simple to achieve. Don't believe me? Just follow my three easy steps below.

  • STEP 1: Dry hair with a blow-dryer (sans nozzle) until it's 80 percent dry.
  • STEP 2: Divide hair into six to eight different sections and twist it away from the face. Secure the twists with a clip and let it air dry the last 20 percent of the way.
  • STEP 3: Take out the clips, flip your head over, and shake out the twists. Then, flip hair up and finger-comb a part. You'll notice little ridges in your hair. This creates a clean, but just-out-of-bed, low-maintenance, sexy look.

I'll be honest, I don't why you would work to acheive this look. This IS just rolled out of bed hair. Fly-away, randomly wavy... not hot.

A little bit of Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray goes a long way too!

Sienna pulls it off, but the rest just look messy. That said, I DO love the Bumble and Bumble surf spray (but you can totally make your own with sea salt, water, lemon, and such).

I tried this on my hair and it doesn't really work very well. But I love this look!

I dry my hair and put it in a messy bun, then take it out later and I've got the same sort of waves. I love it because usually my hair is stick straight.

I must say it takes much less work than that. I do like this kind of hairstyle on me, looks good, low maintenance.

This, maybe with more waves, is the look I get when I air dry. I always lose my waves when I blow dry. I know the "look" isn't for most women, but I cannot DO my hair every day.

Elle, I love the way your hair looks in your picture! Simply pinning certain sections up looks great with our natural hair. I pinned my not-so-bangs up this morning and it almost looks like I made an effort!

To achieve natural loose waves or "bed-head", I wet my hair, put a bit of conditioning cream on (and gel or gel spray if I want extra hold), and twist my hair into a high bun, securing it with bobby pins and letting it dry.

If I want more defined waves, I split my hair in the middle and create two small, high twisted buns on each side of my head.

Both methods are easily achieved when done at night and slept on.

One the hair is 90%+ dried, you can add product for additional hold or shine, and make sure to lightly comb fingers through the hair.

Benefits include a Simple, low-maintenance look which your hair practically does itself overnight, and no harsh heating tools required!!

My hair is curly so I don't know if I can achieve this, but I think Sienna's hair is really cute so I would like to try.

I like this look. One of those oxymoron trends, "I don't give a damn about my hair", when actually it takes a lot of work to look this unkempt. Only a few times, I've been able to nail this look.
