All About Hair Extensions

Wearing hair extensions is a Hollywood hair trend that is becoming more and more mainstream. Hair extensions are human or synthetic hairs that can be bonded, braided, sewn or weaved into your hair to give it length and fullness. They can be cut, colored, washed and cared for just like your own hair. Depending on the quality, they should last up to six months. Virgin human hair is more expensive than synthetic hair, so expect to spend hundreds of dollars — if not more — if you want top-of the line extensions.

Extensions don't hurt, but they can cause damage to your hair if they aren't carefully removed. We've all heard the scary stories about hair being chopped at the root because extensions wouldn't come out. That's why when I first read about the damage-free hair extension remover tool from Sheila Stotts I became intrigued.

I assumed that when extensions are taken out they have to be cut, but actually, the most common types are bonded on by glue. Sheila's product helps to dissolve the bond without breaking the hair shaft. I called her salon to find out more about the product and learned that she has "extended" some of the hottest young heads in Hollywood.

So stay tuned this week for more juicy details on hair extensions including a celebrity quiz, the scoop on the extensions worn by one of your favorite new young Hollywood moms, products to help you care for extensions, and an amazing new drugstore brand of affordable clip-ons that are made from real hair.

I think it would be fun to get extensions...but only if you got the really nice ones, since the synthetic ones look so fake. But I could never spend that kind of money.

Extensions always look, well quite frankly like fake hair , they never look real to me. I dont understand the obsession with them.

lol - wow. when i was growing up, girls would get clowned BIG TIME for wearing extensions/weave. it's really interesting to see how times have changed, even with the little things.

that said, i've been known to bond/braid myself up some Insta-Sexy from time to time. Laughing out loud

I love the idea for adding some volume to a pretty updo or something but I don't think I could justify spending that money on just my hair.

CaterpillarGirl, i disagree. when they are done well, they looks real. i personally didn't know the girls from gossip girls all had extensions. so many celebs in hollywood wear extensions occasionally or wear weaves. for some ppl it's obvious but for others, it really isn't obvious

My hair is huge anyway... adding extensions is the last thing I need.

Ladies, work with what you got. For me, they were really uncomfortable to sleep in and kind of claustraphobic.
Besides, nobody is fooled. Not worth it at all.

I would LOVE longer hair, but extensions seem so high maintenance. I am in the gym a lot, so I don't think I would have the time to care for extensions. Also, my hair is a weird texture that would never match any extensions! Sad

I had the sewn kind last year for about three months. It was like dress up, I could do so much with it and not damage my real hair. It was fun. Getting it put in and taken out is a pain though.

I would love to have extensions... My hair is so thin and fine I can never wear the cute, trendy styles. I love my hair strait and long but it never looks great because there is no volume. I just wish they weren't so expensive! So, until the extension fairy taps me with her wand I'll be sportin the Thin Hair cut... lot's of layers, no longer than shoulder length Sad

I have extensions right now and they take some getting used to, but you can treat them just like your own hair. I got a lot put in and I have wild, sex kitten hair and I love it Smiling
