Beauty Byte: Topshop Pulls "Jesus" Cosmetics

If you like religious kitsch, then don't plan a trip to Singapore. After receiving complaints about a cosmetics line called Lookin' Good For Jesus, Topshop has pulled all of the products from its shelves. The line features lip balm (in "virtuous vanilla"), bubble bath ("Feel like you're walking on water!"), and a "King-size" tote bag, among other cheeky items.

Catholics found the items "disrespectful and distasteful," and Topshop has pulled all of the products. The line is from Blue Q, which also makes the Dirty Girl body-care line. It's always a little bit jokey — witness its tongue-in-cheek Queen soap — but this is the first time I remember this much of a hullabaloo over the products. Have a look below. Do you think they're offensive, or is it just good clean fun?

I think this is pretty cute actually. There definitely have been similar products that I've found offensive, but I don't see anything wrong with these.

Seriously, there's so much crap out there exploiting Jesus' image, and this is what upsets the Catholics? Jesus being used for capitalism is nothing new. Do they also have a problem with the communion wine lip balm that's been out forever? (Was it Blue Q that did that? The one that was in the "wash away your sins" line? That stuff was hilarious, and it actually did smell like "cheap red wine")

I'm a Catholic, and I don't think these are offensive. (personally, I love the "virtuous vanilla") They're so cute! Besides, Jesus has a sense of humor too, wouldn't you think?

Are you out of the journalism business? Just asking, because those rapings happened quite some time ago, and all of the offenders were excommunicated, and rightfully so.

I'm catholic, and i don't find these offensive at all, they have the same type of humor as the "jesus is my homeboy" t-shirts. However, i do know a few "hardcore" catholics that would find these offensive :/

I go to a Catholic Girls School, and while I love this line because I think it's hilarious, I'm not Catholic or Christian, so that may be why.
This is something I could see getting someone at my school in trouble. Simply because it could be considered, "sacreligious".

Personally, I love it. How funny is it to see a nearly 18 year old, in a Catholic School Girl uniform, using the virtuous vanilla lipbalm? ;D

AKirstin-- there is no need for the Catholic Church to "get a grip". It's just tacky and not right. Seeing the responses from everyone just makes me upset. Religion is one thing you don't mess around with. Appearance, ethnicity, gender, age-- as long as it's in good taste. But religion is OFF LIMITS. Makes me freakin' mad to see people think that it's funny or cute. It's not some cute animal, this is a highly respected and regarded religious figure. If someone put Mohmammed on that, you better believe there'd be serious hell to pay. Just because the Catholics aren't reacting with violence doesn't mean they would truly like to see the problem solved in a way that (these days) seems the only way to stop people from messing around with peoples' religion. Don't mess around with religion. I hate how everything is getting so secular these days. Don't freakin mess with religion.

Jesus has a sense of humor-- is he a funny guy? Truly, he was a man of many talents, but I don't think he would have a "sense of humor"-- at least not in this sense. I'm glad to see a person above me referred to Mohammed. If you mess w/Mohammed, it is a certainty that you will get messed up(don't you remember what happened to that Dutch artist w/the comics??). Why is Jesus any different? Don't mistake nonviolence for nonchalance or acceptance. How is it humorous to throw around someone's sacred religious figure as a joke ; as to sell bubble bath? This is not a company that truly means what they say about Jesus. They worship the almighty dollar. I find this utterly disgraceful, tasteless, disgusting and just about any other synonym for those words you can think of.

People who think this is "clean fun" should realize it's the same as poking at ones culture/race. This is totally crossing the line and offensive.

I can see why some ppl would think its offensive. Christianity is not about physical appearance, it places emphasis on the human heart and soul. What these products promote is physical beauty and vanity, which one would recall is one of the seven deadly sins. Yes they look cute and they maybe nice products, but being controversial isn't the way to go about promoting them.

I agree, I Am Awesomeness. I feel the same way about all of these kinds of products. The other day I saw a Jesus action figure. It's just not respectful, IMO. He's not some sort of superhero cartoon character. Christians worship him and putting him on beauty products just seems inane.

Good call. Leave religion out of marketing. Interestingly, I think Buddha gets used more and worse than any other religious idol. The fat-bellied one is used to sell all kinds of crap.

i am awesomeness - I totally agree with you. These products are offensive. I dont care how you want to go about making money, just don't use my religion as a cheap schtick. And insulting the Catholic Church in a public forum is in the same bad taste as creating a beauty line centred around the Lord. Exploiting Jesus Christ to make a profit is disgusting. It doesn't matter to me whether you agree with what the Catholic Church teaches or not, have respect for people who practice their religion and don't mock their faith for money.

I love how Christians are called 'intolerant' and every other name in the book, but it's OK to mock the religion and expect Christians to take it. Jesus would not laugh at or about this. It's a mockery. You and I know this line was created to make a controversial buzz. Pathetic.

There are so many other themes out there to choose from... I don't understand why they can't just leave religion out of it... its not something that should ever be used as a marketing tool... I don't care if you're Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish... anything that has religious or spiritual meaning to ANY religion should be viewed as sacred and not humourous.

Would some of you view this differently while knowing that Christians persecution worldwide is at a high, as in, people are being tortured and killed? Some numbers are saying even more than in past history! The country in which this was released is among many who are NOT supportive of Christianity.

Journalists--you should be reporting on that!

Why would people who live in a country where there is freedom of religion push something that perpetuates mockery of a religion in a country that doesn't have same freedoms? What is the saying? "Ignorance is bliss" esp if you can turn a cute profit off of it.

I don't find it offensive in the least. In fact, I'd probably buy it!

It's certainly a lot better than other Jesus merchandise I've seen. And that's stuff that is supposed to be 'inspirational' to Christians.

Let's face it, organized religion is essentially a fairytale designed to control people. In time people likely will think of the Abraham religions like we think now of the Olympic gods.

Jesus likely never existed and had he existed we'll never know the truth about his life. Over time the Bible was edited and parts thrown out by the Church. And that's assuming that the authors were honest in their accounts to begin with.

Not to mention that Jesus is an important prophet in Islam.

I'm a deist, but I also know that my belief in God has no rational or scientific basis.

The price of free speech is that someone somewhere will be offended. Nobody's religion is more special or important than another's.

And speaking of Mohammed, the offensive cartoon has been republished. As it should be.
